Australian GP 2009 - Race 1/17 (NOT in HD BTW)

Im surprised that Newy didnt anticipate the diffuser re-design - hes always been good at bending the design rules and considering how much hes paid I really thought RBR would be the ones to beat due to a brillant car design.

I guess tacking on the new diffuser in a couple of races time will give an instant boost (~0.5s?) with no expense to handling? (maybe more wear to the rears I guess).

Seems like speed isnt the only issue Mclaren are dealing with:

Hamilton to start from back of the grid
Made my day :D

ps3ud0

Excellent qualifying... Was incredibly close and tense to the end! I think I've been most impressed by Vettel considering his form without the now infamous diffuser. Must admit to feeling a little disappointed for Hamilton though, really isn't the start for a season somebody wanting to defend a championship hopes for! All the best for him...

Was also pleasantly surprised to see the KERS telemetry graphics so early on, considering our previous discussions :)

Now, cannot wait for the lights to go green!! :D

I haven't seen the qualifying yet and don't know who is in pole. Don't tell me!

Is there a link to the qualifying stream (replay) - I can't find it on Iplayer

The links to F1 videos seem to be all over shop on the bbc

Thanks

The BBC f1 website needs better structure at the moment its overcrowded with stories and videos. Ill send them an email with some recommendations :)

As I understand it, RBR won't be able to fit the diffuser without a redesign to the rear suspension - something about pull-rods, rather than push.

Fantastic qualifying! Loved every minute of it.

Its going to be an interesting race tomorrow. I wonder how much fuel Button has.

The interesting thing is that even without this supposed 0.5 seconds the Brawn diffuser gives, Button would still have been on pole anyway. :)

Well, as anticipated, the BrawnGP cars were unbeatable. Also, as anticipated, McLaren struggled. I hope this puts paid to the conspiracy theories that people come up on this forum, about sandbagging. The pre-season form of all teams has been carried through to the race. There has been no sandbagging - McLaren struggled in ALL pre-season test sessions and have continued to do so in qualifying.

I think the exception/surprise has to be Vettel, who wasnt "that" fast in pre-season, but he has performed well on the day.

I can't help but feel that Ferrari are running a heavier fuel load and that they are actually faster than their qualifying positions will suggest.

I know that some of you who are BrawnGP/Button supporters dont quite seem to believe that BrawnGP are genuinely this quick - they were brilliant in pre-season testing and the last time I saw such dominance was in 1992/3 when Williams totally demolished the opposition. Its quite possible that BrawnGP will do the same this year, providing they can continue their development.

Also, DannyJo, drivers do make a difference, but we will see that during the race. The problem for everbody is that the BrawnGP cars are superfast, so the rest of the field are fighting for the minor places behind those cars.

As some of us had said at the time, there was no point in sandbagging and equally no point on running a car on vapours in testing.

I think it just shows us how excellent a driver Vettel is and how probably both RBRs are punching above their weight because of their drivers.

Hope this is true, we will find out tonight. It might just be that KERS makes more of an impact on a heavier car (starting off the grid and down the straights) than a light one (less traction), hence it might be worth watching how this pans out.

Massa says Brawn GP in a league apart

Maybe. I still think that Ferrari have some work to do though.

I can't wait for when they finally ban refuelling and get the drivers back on smell-of-an-oily-rag qualifying. I have the feeling that the BGP cars would have been out of sight of the rest of the field!

They have just been moved to the back of the grid apparently, so not really disqualified as the headline suggested. (I see they've changed it now)
