Australian Grand Prix 2012, Albert Park Circuit - Race 1/20

Would RBR take LH over the rookies they're training though?

Also, would they risk the potential issues of LH and SV in the same team?

Yes they would take him over JEV or Ricciado. And I think the idea of 2 top drivers not working in the same team is not the big issue people think it is.

I read a few journo tweets about that during testing.

Apparently if Schumi doesn't renew, Mercedes have already lined up a replacement driver. That being Hamilton.

Missed that. Sounds like they are very keen on getting him in.

See, I'm not too sure if they'd take him. I've no reason for it, but I just have a hunch that Vettel and Hamilton in the same team would end up a complete disaster, and they just would not get along at all. So I'd wonder if Horner would be willing to take the gamble ala Ron Dennis with Senna.

It would be fantastic viewing though, so I hope they would. :D

Cos im a mclaren fanboi im calling it : Lewis, button and then Di-resta

but as a normal person : Vettel, Lewis/button then most likely Grosean

If RBR continue to dominate the constructors side of things, it would be amazing to have Seb and Lewis in the same team.

For a start we could finally answer the question of who is best in the same machinery!

I would think the difficulty of having that pair in the same team is the issue of number 1 and number 2 driver.

RBR have shown they have a 1/2 system and I think this would cause problems because Seb, as the incumbent, would feel he has entitlement to the position as number 1, and Lewis hasn't really had to experience being a number 2 per se...

I can't see it happening. His only option is Mclaren or Merc unless Vettel moves to Ferrari.

If Hamilton puts himself on the market then they would be stupid not to.

And I see no issue with having 2 top drivers in the same team. I think the whole Senna/Prost thing has blurred peoples vision. Why do team mates have to get on?

I think one of the Toro Rosso drivers will have to be outstanding this year for Horner to choose one of them over Hamilton.

However, it could all be irrelevant if Hamilton is already snapped up by Merc.

Horner needs someone who will sign a 'yes il be number 2' contract, he will never get hamilton to do that, without a dedicated number 2 to be screwed over at any opportunity vettels runs would be less easy.

Just a thought, what would that mean for Di Resta? It always looked like he was being lined up for a Mercedes seat. Maybe he could take Hamiltons spot at McLaren?

Can't see Hamilton going to Merc unless they have built an excellent car this year.

It would seem strange for him to drive for anyone but Mclaren but he needs to get himself in the best car on the grid

Hammy and Rosberg used to be team mates in karts, don't think that would sway his move to Merc though

Other than Silverstone, when was Webber 'screwed over' by RBR last year? To me he was in the number 2 position by simply not being quick enough, not because the team put him there.

I never mentioned webber, but its revealing that you immediately associated my comments with him.

Apparently Horner has said they don't plan on going after Hamilton to partner Vettel.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Hamilton will get a year extension to his contract to stay at McLaren for 2013. Vettel will then go to Mercedes in 2014, Hamilton will go to Red Bull as #1 driver alongside whoever wins this year from Ricciardo or Vergne.

One for arknor, just watched the Inside Grand Prod preview for Australia and they talked about Schumacher. Saying that they expect a decision on his future in F1 by Hungary (which we knew), but then went on to say that if he does retire Mercedes are eyeing up.... Lewis Hamilton!

LOL what? First I've heard of that! Thought I would ask our resident Mercedes expert. So arknor, any truth in that, or just Motors TV picking names from a hat to fill 30 minutes of air time?
probably BS from a pro english biased channel, i'd imagine they want di resta if schumacher retires seeing as he was in there DTM team for so long and they are given FI discounted engines for aslong as they keep him

Yeah, that was my thinking. All the talk I have heard is about Di Resta going to Merc.

However, you have to admit that if Hamilton becomes available Merc would be silly not to at least give him an offer. But I was fairly sure they hadn't openly said they were after him to replace Schumacher like the piece in Inside Grand Prix suggested.

I think what they actually said was something like "If Schumacher does retire, Mercedes have a replacement lined up, Lewis Hamilton, who's contract with McLaren expires at the end of the year", which seemed a bit off.

I was fairly sure that if anything had been said or agreed you would know.
