Mercedes sandbagging hard until Q3 then. Not far off 3/4 a second in the pocket. Doesn’t bode well for the season.

Meh, im not going to bother with qualifying if this is the trend. Will watch the races in the hopes we get the occasional upset but this is a rubbish start to this season. Was hoping red bull and ferrari would be closer.

Dramatic much?

I’d say that’s more of a good Hamilton lap than the outright pace difference. Let’s not forget race pace is something else entirely, so it’s a bit early to write off the whole year.

Why, is qualifying purely about pole, seeing the Haas's come 6th/7th, seeing the actual lap as it unfolded, it was damn amazing. Hamilton's speed in corners, his lines, that lap is pretty much as close to perfection as you get. The same way a football match has a result, but you can enjoy an amazing goal or a fantastic pass regardless of the result. That lap was absolutely amazing to watch regardless of the gap to 2nd that lap was fun to watch.

People banging on about engine modes but you could see Hamilton struggle to get power down on previous laps, sliding around, suddenly being 7/10ths faster makes a car behave very differently, if it's all on the straights it changes your breaking points and drivers all edge up to their best lap looking for the limit.

Even if it was pure engine mode it meant Hamilton had to change and judge every corner entry slightly differently, brake slightly earlier, etc and he did that perfectly. But I think that lap was down partially to power and partially to the fact that Hamilton is on a different level to every other driver on the grid right now. Bottas would not have been 7/10ths up in fact he'd likely be, like most of last year, right with the Ferrari's.

I can appreciate a good lap and hamiltons was fantastic but my enjoyment from qualifying comes from seeing tight battles between multiple drivers for pole, people might enjoy it for other reasons but thats why I personally watch it. Given the gap to 2nd is even larger than last year it doesnt bode well for tight battles in qualifying going forward.
