Australian skills shortage

I wasn’t going to state the obvious but tax is another reason people chose to temporarily live there. For some industries it does pay more, balanced against the higher living expense of course.
After Brexit, I have no reason moving back to the UK. Brexit was the main reason why I left the UK in 2019.

Switzerland aren’t in the EU either. Although they have some agreements that tie them together a bit more closely.

Nope they are not but I am planning to get my Swiss Passport in a few years. Which will open more doors for travel compared what the UK passport currently has.

True but anyone with skills in demand can easily move around. I assume you do not have this which is why you need to wait for the Swiss passport?

I work in STEM but if I want to apply for jobs in Europe. They look at local, then EU, EEA/Single Market and third country last (now being the UK) Saves all the messing round with paperwork if I get and Swiss Passport.

When applying for jobs throughout Europe, people from the UK are last on the list to be selected.

For travel? You mean for jobs?

UK has 173, Switzerland has 174….it’s hardly massive difference.

Makes sense. This depends a lot on the industry and the skills they need. I’m based in tech (also STEM background) and get a lot of offers for jobs in Europe and elsewhere. I’ve always seen a decent degree and experience and you have practically got free movement anywhere in the world.

Both......cant go in that EU fast queue anymore. Got to queue in non-EU section Passport now with the other peasants :D

But on a serious note, its going to benefit me more in the future career wise. Especially if I want to settle here in Switzerland.

Yeah, with working 18 years in IT and all my Azure and Security certs I can easily work in other parts of the world but I rather stay in Europe.

You said open doors for travel…thought that meant the difference in getting in or needing a VISA or not getting in, rather where to queue…

So it was as I said, for jobs, not travel?you know, just to clarify…

Yeah because Heathrow is a main hub and have regular flights throughout the world. Way more than any other UK based airport.
Having said that few passengers are travelling to europe from heathrow. If they fly from heathrow they are probably connecting passengerson full service carriers.
Secondary LCCs serve european destinations.

Getting the train from Birmingham to London if you want to fly out. Expensive and pain in the ass unless you plan way in advance. Since covid, many flights from Birmingham International have been stopped or reduced.

Living in Zurich way more exciting than living in Birmingham or the Black Country where I grow up :)
Been to Zurich for work a few times, found it pretty boring tbh - as other places I went to in Switzerland. Not sure I would rather live in Birmingham, but would definitely rather live in the UK. Pretty sure you can still fly all over the place quite cheaply from Birmingham though.

Eh?

Little in common?
Same language
Similar legal system
Same soverign
Similar system of governance
Similar culture
Similar level of economic development.

We have very little in common with france culturally.
apart from language, the mist applies equally to France, Germany and most of central Europe. And culturally, we are closer to France than Canada or Australia for example. You are just concentrating on language, which mostly just highlights the weakness of the British school system and generates linguistically impaired children.

The biggest problem with Australia for me is where it is, it’s so far away from everything, except New Zealand I guess but it’s not a massive different to Oz from a cultural perspective. Going to Japan is still 10hrs direct.

Culturally NZ is way ahead of Oz in my opinion. Whilst I don't mind Australia and have family and friends there I far prefer the life and integration in NZ. However I'm with you, it's just too far away.

No we aren’t, this is complete nonsense.

What similarities do we have with france? I’ve listed our similarities with Australia which Go way beyond language.

You list what we have in common with france.

He's right. As a French, Brit, Cypriot, I feel I have more in common with the UK than I do when I go to the States or Australia.

We share immense history (back from Roman occupation, the crusades, trying to invade one another, to more recent collaborations and partnerships), and especially societal values. Believe it or not behaviours and cultural breadth are also similar. Our past is steeped in one another and the fact our countries are physically connected also is incredibly important to remember.

Our cultural heritage in the UK and France has been shaped by one another (of course other parts of Europe too) far more significantly than the US/Oz has.

It's hard to see as most of us take language as the measuring element but if you look beyond we have a huge stronger connection with Europe than the other English speaking nations.

That's fine if you live in or by London. More in the Midlands or further up north. You might aswell be in the middle of nowhere for getting abroad quick and easy.

Where I live in Switzerland. I can get to Germany, France, Italy, Austria or Liechtenstein easily by car or train in a few hours. I never had that when I lived in Birmingham.

Yeah it's all backwards and carts an horse up ere in the north.
We sometimes see one of those ' planes ' fly above us from London if the thick industrial smog clears.

Lol, comparing the ability to travel from Switzerland to the rest of Europe( near Geneva?) With the midlands UK.
Not sure if serious?

As a welder I know the possibility to earn lots is there but you have to be in the mines and they are in the middle of bloody nowhere.

Jobs closer to the east coast are similar to the UK.

Also spiders ......no thank you, not for any amount of money.

As a french brit you can probably explain better than I can.

We wouldn’t ban hijabs or turbans in our parliament, but the french do.

Rishi sunak wouldn’t be allowed in parliament unless he removed his kautaka from his wrist.

No such restrictions in U.K./Aus.

this is one glaring example of how our countries have a huge cultural difference from what I can see but maybe you can explain better.

This is all before we get to the fact that our legal systems are different, we don’t have ID cards and neither do Australia, Canada, New Zealand and there’s many more examples.
