Avatar: The Way of the water (Dec 2022)

The more I read about it the more I feel like I’ve seen it already. I know almost exactly how it’s going to be without knowing any of the details. It genuinely sounds dull as dishwater.

ok when to see this today, didn't get out until just after Seven. visual 11/10 story 5.5/10.

you can tell whoever wrote the script for avatar 2 has watch the lion king, as there a scene in avatar 2 that match a certain scene in the lion king 100% if you seen the lion king then you know the scene I'm talking about the moment you see it in avatar.

- Visually incredible, mostly insanely realistic and a technical marvel, but the story would cover 90 minutes as half of the film is just footage of the characters interacting with the xenobiology. Did Cameron have the editor’s family hostage? Opposite of Dune were it felt half the film was missing. If you thought the first one was self-indulgent at the time, oh boy!
- Anything interesting is kind of blink and you’ll miss it or an off-hand comment, quickly forgotten about for more for more scenes of blue aliens swimming with fish. There’s all kinds of world building covered with the supplementary material but isn’t in the films themselves - a real waste. Lore is important.
- Zoe Saldana largely wasted
- the human characters are more cartoonish than the aliens - hurrrr all h00man race nasty evil cancer.
- Whaling bad. Whales are clever. Did I tell you whaling is bad and whales are clever? Let’s go over that again.

There’s some interesting ideas and concepts that are only briefly touched on - it felt like there was a story in there somewhere which largely got swallowed up by the insistence on making alien Blue Planet with the odd explosion. Not a lot actually happens plot-wise. The sub-plots were more interesting than the main story (and the questions you’re left with aren’t answered… till the next one?!).

I don’t have a scoring system but it was just ‘alright’ and I have zero desire to see it again like the first one, except in the form of some nice 4K wallpapers. I will now hope he makes the rest just in the vague hope the story goes somewhere interesting and more Pandora-related.

Also all the trailers were for superhero films. Plz. Make. It. Stop. And Barbie which looks like a film someone on serious hallucinogens came up with.

EDIT - I liked the nod to the aliens from The Abyss btw.

I'd say there's 3 types of 3d experience in the film. I'll say without spoilers.

1 the action sequences at 60fps that are so strangely crisp and you get a feel that it's like watching a 3d tech demo. I find it a little jarring. Computer Game cut scene.

2 the perfect ones where the foreground is popping and your part of it. The real feeling of depth and distance. These are the heavily processed ones but they work so well.

3 just a wide angle beautiful shot with characters and seascape. Nothing sticking out too heavy but a real perception of depth in the ocean.

Itll be interesting to read more peoples reviews.
I have zero interest in the future progression of the story. It's very predictable.

Absolutely loved it from a visual technical pov. The story was good enough for me and I was perfectly happy to be immersed in that world for 3 hours. Can't say I'd be that fussed to watch it again in 2D, but if you don't go see it in 3D at the cinema you are missing an experience.

Saw it last night in 3D super screen. Wow. As said above the cgi was insane and some scenes were breathtaking.

I don’t often walk out of a cinema and have been wowed,

i rewatched part 1 a few weeks ago and i enjoyed this one better.

id say try watch it in cinema if you can. 3hrs flew by for me

Good story or just top notch CGI?

Just out of the Cinema. Thought it was fab. The graphics are out of this world, the story was good too. If you like the first movie you should like this one too. Personally thought it was a solid 8.5 for me. Really enjoyed it.

Glad to see all the positivity. Might see if I can watch it while I'm in the UK over Christmas.

If you liked the first one I would highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed. What I liked most was how immersive it was. Brought you right back to Pandora right off the bat. It's a long movie so make sure you get a comfy seat.
