Bahrain GP 2009 - Race 4/17

I'm not convinced by all these new budget caps at the moment....
I think with all the cars having identical KERS and most likely similar fuel loads the racing will be less overtaking.
Whilst the prospect of vastly different cars is interesting, I don't think it will happen, either all the cars will just end up copying each other and looking remarkably similar, or the FIA will impose some restrictions that mean you can't have vastly different engines and similar.

With the fueling now gone it means that the car that qualifies first is almost certainly going to be the fastest car on the track. :/

I think they should keep it how it is, this season so far has been great, and I think it is only going to get better with Mclaren improving al the time, RBR getting closer and closer to Brawn and ofcourse you just can't write off Ferrari and Renault.

McLaren might not be able to. With Mercedes having some financial issues they might tell McLaren to go for the budget option. They get to stay in F1 but without shelling out loads of cash.

They would also get to develop the engine, which would be a big + for Mercedes I imagine.

The current season has been fantastic so far. With the new aero rule change, it made things for the better.

With the 'new' proposed rule changes, I cant see how things can go forward in regard to more overtaking which is the whole point of the aero changes in the first place wasn't it?

Yup. Most teams will agree to the £40m budget because they can do what they want with the £40m and that doesn't even include driver wages etc.

Mercedes will probably use their shares in McLaren to force this because of the technical freedom with the engines.

"It is believed that engine supplier Cosworth, which has not been in F1 since 2006, can supply an engine at an affordable cost that revs to 20,000rpm and would outperform this year's engines, which are limited to 18,000rpm. "

Isn't it amazing how Cosworth never seem to be out of the running for long? Not supplied engines to F1 since 2006 but could be in with a chance of providing teams in 2010. I'm guessing Brawn/Force India would like to at least talk to Cosworth? Heck perhaps even Williams?

I was always under the impression that it was a standard engine spec, and not a standard engine. Therefore its the Cosworth 'specification' they will use, and all other engine designers will have to match that. Surely then its better for customer teams to stay with who they are and have them just build engines to the Cosworth spec than to move to Cosworth? Providing they charge Cosworth prices that is.

It does look like we may see the return of engine suppliers who are just that, rather than running there own teams. There has always been an air of second rate service if your selling an engine to a team who are competing against you...

Very few people probably know this but Cosworth is the second most successful engine maker in Formula One's history!

There were some years where Cosworth powered cars won every race of the season!

They also supply engines to Ford, Subaru, Nissan, and Mitsubishi (Evo).

Very true, if cosworth get back into f1 well see some very reliable and powerful engine. Hopefully with the closeness of this season and some decent engines coming in, next years season will be mixed up with multiple winners.

Ah right. So an engine template then? Build your engine the way we do or buy one from us?

i think the no refueling thing is great.

ive seen some great nascar moments when the driver has nearly ran out of fuel, or actually has :D

will certainly bring an interesting dynamic to the sport.

Jean Alesi, Benetton, Australia 1998? Ran out of fuel. Went past pits many time with the team hanging out "PIT" signs and he never pitted. :D Flav fined Alesi 1/16th of his yearly wage for that cockup. I think Alesi was in the lead at the time hence he was excited and didn't want to pit?

Wasn't there a race with Mansell? running out of fuel before the line and pushing the car to finish, needless to say he was not a winner.
In 87 Mansell ran out of fuel on the slowdown lap after winning the British GP. Can't find anything else on Wikipedia about him running out of fuel.

I sort of remember an old vid of a guy pushing a car over the line (don't know who it was though).
Transmission failure on the final lap of the 1984 Dallas GP.

Mansell was remembered by many this year when he collapsed while pushing his car to the finish line after the transmission failed on the last lap of the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix. The 1984 Grand Prix was the hottest on record, and after 2 hours of driving in 104°F (about 40°C) conditions Mansell fainted whilst pushing his car over the line to salvage a sixth place finish (and thus 1 championship point) in a race he had started from pole and led half of.

http://www.grandprix.com/gpe/rr397.html The text says he ran out fuel, the table says gearbox. :D
