With regards to bravery and excitement - I dont think anyone beats Mansell.
Once again, something we agree on. We're going to have to stop doing this
For me, although I'm chuffed Hamilton and Button have had recent success, there has been nobody to beat our Nige. It's all about championing the underdog, the fighter - that 1992 Monaco GP was just mental...
There will never be another one like Il Leone. To be loved by the English is one thing. To be loved by the tifosi even long after he left Ferrari....
Mansell was the reason I supported Ferrari when I started watching F1 properly. It's a shame they could never give him a car that could challenge for the title, but I guess all those years of him either nearly making it or being forced to compete in equipment that just wasn't up to the task made 1992 all the more sweet. I can still remember the '92 British GP and Murray's commentary as Mansell rounded the last couple of bends. In fact, I can remember rather more about the '92 season than I can of 2007 and 2008. Shows just how good the racing was even with the ultra-dominant Williams I guess.
If I could pick two races that sum up Mansell for me, it'd be the '87 British GP and the '89 Hungarian race. '87 saw him have to claw back nearly half a minute in 28 laps on his team-mate (Piquet, still at the top of his game at that stage of his career and a bloody good driver) after having to make an unscheduled stop. He caught Piquet by lap 58, and then performed the Silverstone Two-Step on him going into Stowe on the next lap. He blew by Piquet, and pulled out nearly two seconds on him despite the fuel gauge reading empty for the final two laps of the race. '89 Hungary was similarly epic - starting 12th after a difficult qualifying session, he scythed his way up the order before getting by Senna and simply driving away from everyone. He ended up about 25sec ahead by the end IIRC.
He may have put us through the wringer on far too many occasions, and he may have been a bit of a moaner with a persecution complex, but he was never dull. That's something that a few of the current crop could learn from.
