Just saying that if it was one of Merc's own components that failed, then yes, it's fair.

A tyre failing and taking out suspension and possibly driveshaft, and that all the teams have to run that component, then it's not that fair.

How do we know he didn't cut it over a kerb or something?

I don't think I've seen a slick delaminate since they were reintroduced unless it's been damaged (usually due to a lockup).

Massa gains the most from those penalties I guess, Ferrari will be hoping he does not pass Alonso at turn 1 though lol :D

If Massa passes Alonso at the start, Alonso will pass Massa and then open up a huge gap during the course of the race.

Massa's one lap pace is now equal to that of Alonso's. But during the race Alonso drives with superior intelligence, managing his tyres better. In some instances, he actually drops behind the slower car and when the pit-stops arrive, he posts considerably faster lap-times and leap-frogs the cars which were ahead of him. And with DRS, there is no longer any excuse for any driver to get stuck behind a considerably slower car.

My race predictions:
1=2 Vettel/Alonso (nothing to choose between these 2)
3. Kimi/Massa (again, nothing to choose between these 2)

I'm not expecting a good race tomorrow.
I think its going to be a borefest, with the positions being sorted well before 50% race distance. I hope I'm wrong.

Duke, if you get the time, can you do a similar table for the Race?

Consdering everyone thought the Mercs were lacking pace that's an awesome lap for Nico!

Given the fact that Merc have 2 poles on the trot, I don't think they lack 1-lap pace. Their problem is that they wear out their tyres faster than their rivals.

What this means is that they are able to compete for 1st place during qualifying. But are unable to compete for 1st place during the race.

Why did Hamilton run in q3. At best he would end up 7/8th. He's put laps on a fresh set of tyres and starts 1 place better than if not running. And he would have been behind a mclaren he would have passed quickly.

Could have got Pole and then he'd be starting 6th but totally agree with you given the outcome.

Yes, but throughout free practice they were nowhere to be seen both on long and short runs. Everyone seemed surprised by Nico's performance in Q2 and Q3.
