Bahrain Grand Prix 2014, Sakhir - Race 3/19

Interesting comment from Lewis' engineer about being aware these could be the tyres he started the race on. Suggesting Merc are so comfortable that they didn't feel the need to push too hard in Q2 and risk a lockup or taking to much life from them.

Pretty ominous, and suggests the Q2 pace is well short of Mercs total pace.

That either means Lewis will sit out Q3 , or not set a time (unlikely)

Or set an early time (again with Rosberg so close, thats a risk) so that he can then do a run on the Q2 tyres - or do Q3 on the same q2 tyres (and what - 3 timed runs on the same tyres)

Sounds very strange even given their dominance

Rules have changed this year. If you make it into Q3 then you start on the tyres you set your fastest time on in Q2. Its because they get an extra set of tyres for Q3 that they can't take to the race, so in all likely hood most of the Q3 drivers will set times on tyres that they then hand back.

So Lewis will go for pole, then start on the tyres he set the time in Q2 on. His engineer reminding him therefore not to kill them in Q2.

Its an unnecessarily complicated set of rules if you ask me.

so within 3 races the cars are now within a second of last years pole. they will be quicker by race 10, i predicted end of season but i reckon much sooner now.

They are quicker in a straight line, but slower in high downforce corners.

I imagine they might smash last years times at places like Monza, but struggle to get close at tracks like Suzuka and Monaco.

It will almost certainly be race specific as they are fast/slow in different areas. At tracks more like this that favour fast straight speed they'll likely surpass last years times at some stage this season. At slower tracks with more corners they might not get that close, we'll see.

The track might have something to do with it though. Heavy breaking followed by heavy acceleration. which suits these PU with they're huge torque. But I do agree by the end of the season.

With more torque are they not quicker on corner exit speed? Or does the more down force from last seasons car still carry more corner exit speed by being able to get on the power earlier?

Its the corners that weren't even corners last year. Like the high speed sweepers at Malaysia and turn 2 at Melbourne. Suddenly the cars aren't on rails.

hmm, this final run, why do they not use the tires for the race?

brundle just said they give them back.

See my post above, rule change this year.

They get given a free set of softs for Q3 to prevent people sitting out the session. But they give these back after Qualifying. As they give them back, they have shifted the 'start on your qualifying tyres' rule back to the times set in Q2.
