Magnussen, delighted, historically a bit of a robust/dirty racer but wow! Brilliant performance.

Wait to see the sponsorship roll in for Haas next race. Mazepin - man alive, the guy must be feeling absolutely gutted; losing his career when the car is coming good - ouch.

Mercedes, no where as bad as feared, much happier. Come on Ferrari!

So Ferrari with the special sauce in that engine (hope it's legit this time!)

Merc not too far behind really, earlier on everyone seemed to be writing off their season completely but once they get on top of the obvious bouncing issue and make some tweaks they will be there or there abouts imo.

As much as I hate it, RBR and Max have impressed the most in qualifying for me, fighting right up until the last race and still manage to come out fighting fit at the first time of asking, Just hope Charles gives as good as he gets.

It's a question I always wonder.

If Lewis had closed the door each time last year, how many collisions would there have been?

Lewis gave way many a time (playing the long game) knowing the inevitable Max lunge. Very intrigued to see how it will play out with other drivers in the same position; will they give space, back out, or hold their line?

If you can prove via cold hard statistics why Lewis *isn’t* the GOAT we’ll all shut up.

… We’re waiting.

Hamilton is one of the greats, but the greatest of all time? Think he needs to improve more stats.

Where are most poles, most laps led and more importantly most WDCs? Hahaha. No prizes for guessing who tops those and why you excluded them.

Also even with that restrictive list Hamilton and Schumacher come out as the clear top 2.

Some of those also clearly need to be put in context. Like the percentage wins. I'm also not sure what is special about consecutive wins.

A very selective selection there

Great copy and pasting skills though.

I literally ran down the statistic list in Wiki, but it covers the point. He isn't the GOAT.

GOAT is an overused term, as soon as you say "these people are clearly top 2" it probably means one isn't the GOAT, because there isn't a GOAT.

Guess why I excluded those then.

Yeah, one of the greats. Doesn't mean he's the GOAT. Clearly Schumacher gets a look in to that argument and if you're arguing about it then there probably isn't anyone who deserves to be called the GOAT. That's not an insult, it's just most things in life there's plenty of competition at the top. Hamilton is a great, but there are others who are also in the same boat as him.

Someone has to be the greatest, people can't be equal, its highly improbable. Just because it is difficult to pick, in your opinion, doesn't mean there isn't one. There must be one by definition.

If it isn't Hamilton, who is it in your opinion?

Also keep in mind this about a discussion about how Hamilton is rubbish and he's just been lucky with his car. You are providing selective evidence for that line of argument.

edit: although i can see those posts have now been deleted.

No, there doesn't need to a greatest. Because the sport and the way it happens changes. Is Hamilton the greatest driver in the 2010s? Yes. Is he better than Schumacher or Senna? No idea, and we'll never know.

For the record, I do place him and Schumacher as the top 2.

Edit: to clarify a bit more, people I think can be regarded as GOATs:
  1. Tom Brady.
  2. Michael Phelps.
And people who are maybes if I knew more about the sport/history:
  1. Serena Williams.
  2. Usain Bolt.
That's probably about it.

Yeah Schumacher also didn't have as many races in a season as Lewis which effects his race wins. You also have to look at on field competition and individual drives. Mansell who is my favourite brit imo is far higher than his championships show. That drive he did at Hungary in 89 is stuff of legends. Plus he was driving against Piquet, Prost and Senna and got shafted in 93.

Right chaps, let’s get back to the topic. This is the Bahrain GP thread, if you want to argue about who likes goats the most… start a new thread.

Bets on a first lap crash tomorrow? I’ll go with at least 4 retirements through attrition (cars dying) not involved in crashes.

@EVH agreed debating the best of all time is for another thread!

Personally, there will never be the best of all time - instead, the best of each decade is the closest measure.

Whilst I am concerned Hamilton wont be able to fight Red Bull/Ferrari early on, this could be the making of him, the underdog.
