Right chaps, let’s get back to the topic. This is the Bahrain GP thread, if you want to argue about who likes goats the most… start a new thread.

Bets on a first lap crash tomorrow? I’ll go with at least 4 retirements through attrition (cars dying) not involved in crashes.

Can see kmag retiring early as he had gremlins in Q2 then stopped on track I think after his run at the end of Q3. At least one of the Alfa Romeo will DNF going by thier hydraulic problems in testing.

Wouldn't surprise me if McLaren's can't last the whole race in hot air behind other cars with their brake issues.

That's 4 potential dnfs before any crashes

Agree with the high attrition, but I also think the first corner is going to be a mess, all through testing people were struggling to find breaking points with these much heavier worse in slow corner cars. Add to that full fuel, plus engines turned up, plus a bunch of drivers thinking they can make up a few places. Someone, probably one of the young guys, is gonna balls it up and maybe take 2 or 3 others with them... I can't wait!

This. Enough already.

I also think there's going to be a fair few retirements tomorrow, have a feeling McLaren aren't going to last the distance.

They're fighting Red Bull who are far, far, far more into that. Ferrari need more.
Exactly. If we do end up with a relatively even RB vs Ferrari battle, you'd bet on Max taking the title because RB will do everything in their power to win him every point possible. If Ferrari let their drivers compete, they'll risk finishing 2nd and 3rd overall.

One thing that has driven me mad already is the commentator’s insistence on saying “Zhou, Guanyu”. Every. Single. Time.

Firstly, what’s wrong with simply calling him Zhou and secondly it makes no bloody sense. They don’t say “Ricciardo, Daniel” every time … so why feel the need to shove his first name in like that?

Seriously, someone tell me I’m not the only one to notice this nonsense :D

I guess as the correct pronunciation is basically "Joe", many viewers will go "Who?"

So it is for clarity as he has just started maybe?

Even the BBC results page is at it...

13 NOR
14 ALB
15 Guanyu Zhou
16 TSU

I also thought that but just call him by his proper full name I.e Guanyu Zhou, not this last name first nonsense :p

It’ll wind me up all race today!

Brundle and Croft were discussing this yesterday, they stated it was by request of the driver himself that he is referred to like this. Chinese (Asian) names are generally reversed i.e. family name then given name.

This. They’re using the name he wants to be used. I don’t see a problem with it.

I think we’ll see a good few more than 4, it’s usually the way at the start of a rule change. I’ll be shocked if there is no first lap crash.

It’ll be interesting to see how closely these cars can follow. So far most of them look absolutely horrendous to drive - terribly slow on the slow corners, bouncing all over the place and incredibly twitchy.

Race start at 3pm?

Regarding the apparent lack of top speed from Mercedes powered cars, a theory I've not read yet is the possibility that Mercedes may have deliberately gone for a smaller and more efficient PU, akin to what Renault did to great success in the second half of the V8 era (particularly with Red Bull, but also with the former Renault/Lotus customer team).

Obviously if that is the case it's not bearing fruit yet, but it could open up huge aero possibilities if Mercedes can get on top of their "min pod" design during this locked PU era, as no other PU manufacturer will be able to adopt such an approach until 2026.

I know there have been some departures from HPP and challenges getting the most out of the E10 fuel for all the manufacturers, but I can't imagine they've been left behind to such an extent when they finished last year with the clear best PU (especially out of the box).

It's just a theory, but in light of just how compact the Mercedes is and their relative drop in power, I do wonder if it's a case of knowing they would lose their power title but thinking it can be made up by gains elsewhere as a result.

Were Brundle and Croft commentating on Sky? I'm using F1TV which used to use the Sky commentary, but noticed through this race the've had a bunch of randoms such as Palmer and some others that sound like they the fan commentary sky used to have on the football yers ago.

Fine theory but its just reminded me, did you see ocon when his sidepod blew off on Friday? There was so much empty space behind the rad I was really surprised. I'll see if I can find a pic
