Isn't it a historical band aid for when the cars couldn't follow closely to pass and as such it was introduced to alleviate that? Then it kind of stuck around... It looked really powerful when Max was trying to get Charles at the end of the pit straight but i can't help thinking that Charles was saving his battery for the second DRS zone where he kept taking first place back.

In an interview, Charles said he was letting him past on the first knowing he could get him in the second while letting his battery recharge so he could use it to gap Max once he was past.

Great race. Driver of the day for me was Magnussen. It was a great way for him to show his ability and I look forward to seeing him mix it up more in races to come.

I'd forgotten about that until you mentioned it and now I remember Seb was basically driving huge amounts of a lap one handed before it was banz0red :)

Yes some were using back of their hands, others using side of the knee and I think some were using their elbows. It's no wonder the FIA stopped it.

I think you mean Alonso. There’s an interview where Ted asks then team principal Domenicalli “so he’s adjusting the brake bias with one hand and operating the f-duct with the other… how’s he steering the car?” :D

McLaren operated the system by covering the gap with their leg whereas Ferrari had a hole in the tub next to the left hand of the driver, meaning they had to drive one handed if they wanted to use it.

I believe it was this implementation that got it shelved.

The fascinating thing is how some teams who were apparently rubbish at making fast cars have come up with half reasonable ones and some teams who were reasonable at making fast cars have made rubbish ones,

Just shows there's more to it than a lot of analysis.

Well well well,

I'm going to put that down to Karma lol

Great to see the Ferrari up at the front and on complete merit, F1 needed that imo. Just wish one of the other teams had made a step up also.

Merc off the pace but not a million miles away really, sort out that bouncing and they will be fighting for podiums on pace for me.

Just watched the race highlights on Channel 4. Wow, awesome season opener. The three laps of overtakes with Charles and Max was great.

Pleased that Zhou got a point on his debut.

Can't believe how bad the McClaren cars are this year. They were doing badly for a few years, then found their mojo, but now have gone back to crapness. Feel sorry for Lando and Daniel.

Latifi and Schumacher still rubbish, don't know why they have a seat.

Haas very impressive. Be interesting to see if they'll be consistent.

Wondering how Vettel would have done today if he was still with Ferrari. No doubt crashed or made some catastrophic mistake.

Are the Mercs engines slower than last year, or the same but just not as quick now as Ferrari and RB? George Russell was saying that if they can sort out the bounciness it would really improve their speed instead of it being compromised by the constant up and down bouncing and crashing into the ground.

The safety car flattered them to be honest. I'm pretty sure Lewis was 30-40 odd seconds off the lead before it came out. That's a lot of time to find...

However the tyres may make things interesting in that they seem to be quite fragile and need to be loved rather than abused. I think they will reward the smoother drivers.

I think a lot of that was down to the bad tyre choice when they switched to hards.

I forgot about that, that definitely wouldn't have helped either. I guess we'll have to see what they are like over the next few races for a better picture. I hope they can help mix it up at the front though.

When on similar tyres they didn't seem to drop back too much, they of course did but it wasn't embarrassing. Given they look to be having major issues in an area they usually dominate (straight line speed) I don't think it's a total write off just yet.

Having said that, they may just struggle with the balance of performance and bouncing for the whole season yet.

Ouch for Red Bull! In these days of high reliability a double DNF like that could take half the season to overhaul. Mercedes were lucky today and Ferrari the class of the field. Really hope Merc can make some quick improvements to give us a genuine 3-way fight.

Thoroughly enjoyed that. Get ****** Red Bull. I hope their engines blow up every race.

That Ferrari engine is a monster.

Couldn't have gone better for Mercedes considering (well, except for both Ferrari 's retiring too!)
