Ballistix Sport LT Overclocking

Just built my first PC :-) Ryzen 1600AF, Tomahawk Max and 2 x 8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport LT BLS8G4D32AESBK 3200 MHz DDR4

Running Windows 10 and everything runs fine so far. However, the memory was running at 2400Mhz. I went into the BIOS to change it and from what I see you've 2 options.... A-XMP Profile, or set it yourself within the OC menu.

I've gone into the OC menu and set the DRAM frequency to 3200Mhz. Saved it and rebooted, everything loads fine, task manager shows the memory now running as 3200Mhz.... Is it that simple, or is there something else that I need to do?

I wasn't sure if it's best to use the A-XMP profile, or manually configure it?

  • SOC: 1050mV
  • CLDO_VDDP: 901mV
  • CLDO_VDDG: 951mV (CCD & IOD)
  • VDIMM: 1.365V
  • VTTDDR: 0.687V

Initially I started testing the RAM at 3200MHz, I was using 16-18-18-18-42-60-4-4-560-8 with 1.35V. Same timings at 3333MHz I needed 1.355V as system froze in use at one point with 1.35V. 1.355V VDIMM was good for upto 3600MHz with same timings, but after an hour or so of sustained memory intensive loading I'd have an error. At this point I thought I'll target 3666MHz/3733MHz.

3666MHz/3733MHz was horrendously bad for error count. I tried minor increases of all voltages that may aid stability, changes to ProcODT/RTT/CAD Bus and still had wild errors. I knew the CPU/MOBO could do 3800MHz as had had Samsung B die up there with ease and pretty stock like voltages.

I then changed timings, set 1.39V VDIMM and boom 3800MHz was showing signs of stability. I lowered timings a few times and did quick round of testing of each. I then left it at 16-19-19-19-45-64-4-4-589-10 and lowered to 1.365V. Rig is still under testing as I type, ~45hrs uptime of mixed testing.

Looking back on all the data I think Trtp of 8 was hindering stability at 3600MHz/3666MHz/3733MHz. At 3600MHz set TRFC of 560 = ~311ns, as 3800MHz profile is showing no issues at ~310ns (589) that was not the issue. Currently I'm 1 click above for Trcdwr/Trcdrd/Trp, which I may snag lower, even if I don't it's not a "game changing" loss TBH.

It's always best to do it manually. You should be able to get 3600Mhz stable quite easily by checking some of the posts in this thread and copying the timings.
 
An updated ZIP, organise files by time. On Micron E die 3800MHz Phase 1 mixed testing of ~48hrs continuous uptime. Phase 2 I have lowered VDIMM to set value of 1.36V, from past experience with board a read with DMM on Probeit point for this would be ~1.364V.

Filenames at beginning have:-

  • Setup means test on POST when profile setup in UEFI.
  • FCP means a full fold POST, ie power supply switched off from wall prior to POST.
  • FP means a full POST from shutdown.
  • WP means a warm POST test run.
  • SPx means count of testing on same Post.
  • When a filename is repeated exactly, just capturing data of the same test run but later.

I would try 3600 mt/s at 18-20-20-40 (?) at 1.4v just to make sure the fclk can hack it. Stress test and then drop frequency on fail. Zen+ going up to 3600 is pretty lucky.
 
hi, can anyone who has Crucial Ballistix Sport LT BLS2K16G4D32AES rams share u a ryzen timing checker screen of XMP profile please?
I have BLS2K16G4D30AESC rams with a 2700X and gigabyte X470 gaming 7.
I am currently testing them at 3200 cl14-16-15-16 at 1.35v, bclk at 102.4, vsoc 1.0125v. Beyond 3200mhz I do not find stability, it is probably the IMC of the CPU.

Have you tried DRAM caculator for Ryzen it will have some suggestions for you.

You can get the stock XMP out of thaiphoon?

You'll need to raise tRCD to 17 if you want to raise the frequency and tRAS to at least 30. However your timings are pretty tight and possibly too tight for higher frequency. Definitely drop the bclk down to 100 if you can.

As above:-

Thank you for your suggestion. Yes, I used the ryzen dram calculator (I wouldn't be able without it). I set the values of 3600, started the tests by lowering the frequency but did not get good settings. Later I started with the values of xmp and reached 3200 (with 15-16-16-16) stable. From this point I started using the lower frequency subtimings of the ryzen dram calculator (up to 2970Mhz) and it seems stable. I would like to try the same procedure with the XMP 3200 CL16 values (including subtimings), i.e. find the maximum frequency and then lower the timings without raising the voltage beyond 1.35v. With the values you recommend should I use the subtings in the car of the xmp profile?

As recommended I am trying with the most relaxed timings and going up in frequency, I have reached 3549Mhz, but it seems that the game performance is slightly lower.

Try this..

Set SOC voltage to 1.1v and DRAM voltage to 1.4v

Save and exit, go back into your bios.

Then, do this..

First of all, enable GearDownMode.

Change your timings to:

tCL - 16
tRCDWR -16
tRCDRD - 20
tRP - 16
tRAS - 36
TRC - 56
TRFC - 550

Also, make sure these values (in red squares) are set in your bios exactly like that!

Save and exit, go back into the bios again.

Set your Memory speed to 3600Mhz

Save and exit.

Boot to Windows and check stability!

Sadly no.. I don't get crashes or BSOD's, but I do get errors running memtest.

Set bclk to 100 and just overclock with multiplier.
 
With the CL16 timings, errors have always been reported (also with soc 1.1125v and ram 1.45v), I dropped to 3549Mhz (timing 3600, vsoc 1.1v, ram 1.42v) and memtest was passed.
I try to go down with the timings and then with the volts:

"trcdrd" is the problem! It's really too low to be stable at 3600Mhz.
