Bayonetta

Just tried the demo on Xbox Live and wasn't really impressed. For the following reasons...

- All you do is mash the buttons, I never really felt I was doing anything other than just randomly hitting any button to kill things.

- The music was rubbish, that kind of synthy sounding stuff you get on Japanese beat em ups.

- Not really sure what was going on with story as such, or where it was even really supposed to be set, but considering it had Sega as the publisher, it reminded me so much of the cheesey kind of sequences you got on the likes of Time Crisis and other classic Sega arcade games.

- Bayonetta herself is totally over the top. I thought games had maybe moved on a bit from the past, even Lara Croft is a lot more normal looking than her over the top early days. This game just reeks of a Japanese style 'Dead or Alive Volleyball' type thing, aimed at getting the interest of teenage boys. Especially when she does some of her moves and most of her hair clothes come off.

Maybe these kind of games aren't my thing, but I do really enjoy God of War, so perhaps not. Bayonetta seemed pants to me, so I'm really shocked its getting such high acclaim.

Framerate was rock solid on the 360, i very much enjoyed it, the fact you can link combos together with different weapons DMC3/4 style very much appealed to me.

I adore this game already, just played the demo this morning and its absolutly mental. I love the style and bonkers gameplay. Will definetly be picking this up for 360 after christmas, hopefully it isn't too hard as I'm not actually very good at these sorts of games!! :)

It's good, but certainly not great!

Definitely not a 10/10 game but worth a 2nd hand purchase I think.
Graphics/Music/Gameplay/Longetivity certainly aren't all 10/10 so don't know how some places have given it that. Not slagging it off but by reading the reviews I was expecting a lot more than a button bash, the odd dodge and big monsters coming in!

That's a bit mean of them to give us a crap ps3 version.

I presume it's because they found it all too taxing - why else ignore their target market of Japanese gamers on the PS3? The Xbox 360 market is practically worthless in Japan and already us westerners are thinking of it as a rental/pre-owned purchase.

And you can tell all this from half of the first level with all of the opening cinematics removed? Keep in mind the majority of the weapons, combos, spells, enemies and characters are missing from it. You can't judge the longevity of the gameplay without knowing to what extent it evolves. It would be like judging Ninja Giaden on the level 1 dragon sword when there's umpteen others to collect and upgrade.

Maybe so but the demo comprised of bashing 2 buttons, the odd dodge and nice cinematic sceen. But by longetivty i don't mean how long the game lasts, I mean how long it can keep people interested rather than doing the same thing over and the replayability once you have gone through the entire story.

Like I said, I'm not slagging it off but 10/10 for something that seems quite repetitive doesn't seem right to me!

PS3 port is crap because Platinum Games gave it to Sega handle that version by pretty much all themselves and it's quite obvious there why it went wrong.

And as for this game getting high scores if one can't understand why, it's mainly to do with the engine and mechanics of the game and what it all does for this type of genre.

Taking the 360 version into consideration, it's the fact that the game just runs so exceptionally smooth even with the amount of stuff that happens on-screen, and the combat is a lot deeper than one can realise instead of generalising it as a simple button-masher. The responsive controls really helps it there.

Again you don't know that all of the combos are available yet, you also don't know how enemies will adapt to button mashing later in the game. You could argue that in DMC4 the first level or two are simple button mashing affairs but in the higher difficulties against tougher enemies it's anything but that, every move must be meticulously planned and executed. I anticipate this game to evolve heavily as you progress, i also expect the higher difficulties to prove a great challenge, it's not uncommon for an average game to get a couple of good reviews but this is getting so many gushing reviews there's obviously a lot more to expect from it.

How come the PS3 version doesn't have the clock tower falling sequence?

Because sega spent all the money on marketing rather than porting it to the ps3.

Though the demo apparently leaves out not only some of the higher combos, but also some fairly important base mechanics such as counters.

But i agree with streeteh and Phatjayunoi with the game is much deeper than it seems from the demo, i understand only a few people enjoy the arcade scoring mash em up genre, and fewer again who get into the fine details of the scoring. But according to far too many sources bayonetta seems to be the one to get the best formula for it all so far.

Well I certainly hope so :)

been playing the ps3 demo and i love it, easily up there with DMC and has a nice control, combo system. Good to know that Sony have jumped in to iron out any issue's that people have been moaning about.

You can hold combos ! you can start a combo turn in to panther form run around then resume a combo it's insane !

Demo is downloaded, though I don't hold out much hope for it - purely because I just don't 'get' games like this much. Not only that, I can imagine the wife moaning about the nudity and such! :p

EDIT:

Can see the appeal, but just struck me as total random madness. All of it.

Agreed. It bugs me when people criticise games of this type for being button mashers. Any fighter can be button mashed - DMC, GoW, Tekken, SF etc. You'll be crap and the game and won't begin to scratch the surface of the combat system, but you can button mash.
