Don't forget it was only a couple of years previous that everyone was doing the same for James 'Fathead' Allen.
Oh, I for one am not likely to forget JA's commentary on the 2007 Brazilian GP for a while yet....

Same. I thought it was very good, especially considering this is their first race in the commentary box together. Martin especially did the lead commentator bit well. DC spotted something that Martin hadn't when Sutil had a bit of fun on the straight. Had it been Legard he'd have thought it was another bit of fun from Sutil and not a replay. So, a qualifying session in ... and I must say, as predicted, I liked the DC + Brundle pairing
Well other qualifying sessions might be harder to fill but with Australia being the first GP and we've got some new rules its surely an easier qualifying to "fill" than say the Valencia GP qualifying mid-season?I was quite impressed with the pairing today - qualifying to me always seems like it's harder to "fill" than the race for the commentator but they did well.
Certainly didn't miss Legard today!
This, because there were definitely occasions where the two were so busy engrossed in discussion of technical details that they failed to react to overtaking manoueuvres on-screen. And Brundle is probably still cringing at the pause between his "they're off!" statement and the red lights going out[...] Give them some more time and they will be an amazing combination
I think Brundle could carry the commentary on his own but then he's only ever commentated on F1 with a partner, Murray, James Allen, Legard and now Coulthard. Murray was the last F1 commentator to do the work on his won and I think Brundle would not like being on his own; I think he enjoys working with someone else to bounce ideas off.I came away with the suspicion that Brundle could carry the commentary all by himself - Coulthard seemed a little redundant - but I think once they get into their rhythm, all will be well

Just had a quick look on Wikipedia and it seems you're right. I don't remember hearing Palmer at all during the 1996 season.I can't remember Murray commentating solo on F1 in my lifetime. There may have been the odd one off. He partnered up with James Hunt after he retired so probably the 1980 season, then Jonathan Palmer from 1993.
