'BBC considering ditching Legard'

I liked James Allen, I'd love to see him back. Unlike Legard he did at least know his stuff; I'd rather a biased knowledgeable person than an impartial goon. I too am not really convinced by the Brundle/Coulthard option, but must give it a chance to work.
Still seems to be only one generally-agreed on solution though - Crofty moved from Five Live. He and Alan Green are probably two of my favourite commentators on any sport.

So, a qualifying session in ... and I must say, as predicted, I liked the DC + Brundle pairing
Same. I thought it was very good, especially considering this is their first race in the commentary box together. Martin especially did the lead commentator bit well. DC spotted something that Martin hadn't when Sutil had a bit of fun on the straight. Had it been Legard he'd have thought it was another bit of fun from Sutil and not a replay. :p

Watched the qually on iPlayer and was a bit shocked to see that it was "Legard" and "Brundle" commentating when I loaded it up. :D

I was quite impressed with the pairing today - qualifying to me always seems like it's harder to "fill" than the race for the commentator but they did well.
Well other qualifying sessions might be harder to fill but with Australia being the first GP and we've got some new rules its surely an easier qualifying to "fill" than say the Valencia GP qualifying mid-season?

I didn't like James Allen.
I hated Jonathan Legard.
I miss the Murray Walker Martin Brundle duo.
Would've liked Toby Moody from Eurosport or even Charlie Cox + Steve Parrish.
Ben Edwards would be good as has been said.
Brundle + Coulthard I quite like, just need to find their feet with their new roles, (They get on well having been Manager/Driver and have also both driven F1 cars too)
I think once they've settled in they will be a great twosome.
Finally looking good for F1, hopefully we get a good race tomorrow.

I found qualifying and the race to be a hugely improved experience. It was nice to hear 2 people who know what they're talking about, doing their best not to interrupt or talk over eachother and perfectly willing to admit any errors they made without just blustering on through as Legard tended to do.
Nice to have it all be about the racing so a big thumbs up from me and I'm not even particularly fond of Coulthard.

Edit: and I don't hate Legard, I just hated his F1 commentary. I wasn't a huge fan of MW but at least he had senility and adrenalin injected through his eyeballs as an excuse, plus it was always amusing when his brain caught up with his mouth and eyes (in that order) and he realised when he'd gaffed :)

Must say, loved them even more during the race commentary compared to quali.

Brundle lead the commentary all the way, and Coulthard chimed in now and then.
Give them some more time and they will be an amazing combination

It was a pleasure to watch with Brundle and Coulthard doing the commentary, even at that time of the morning! It was grown up and relaxed, no getting hyper about little things that are inconsequential during the race.

Not once did I find myself getting into a rage and wanting to shout at the TV for some idiotic schoolboy error as I used to with either Fathead or Legard.

It can only improve. I'll give them 9/10 and a thumbs up.

This, because there were definitely occasions where the two were so busy engrossed in discussion of technical details that they failed to react to overtaking manoueuvres on-screen. And Brundle is probably still cringing at the pause between his "they're off!" statement and the red lights going out :D

I do feel that some of the conveyance of excitement has been sacrificed for technical/racecraft knowledge. For me, and I assume a lot of us here, that's a good thing. As was the pair's blatantly and entertainingly non-neutral stance on, say, Hispania.

I came away with the suspicion that Brundle could carry the commentary all by himself - Coulthard seemed a little redundant - but I think once they get into their rhythm, all will be well :)

Between both Martin and David they managed to make the race very interesting, Martin understands that he has to explain F1 to unknowing/first time viewers but at the same time can appeal to long time F1 fans in the same breath. First main commentator to be able to get that since Murry :)

David is an excellent addition to the commentary box as he both interesting and good when things get action packed.

Can only get better with them too!

I think Brundle could carry the commentary on his own but then he's only ever commentated on F1 with a partner, Murray, James Allen, Legard and now Coulthard. Murray was the last F1 commentator to do the work on his won and I think Brundle would not like being on his own; I think he enjoys working with someone else to bounce ideas off.

I can't remember Murray commentating solo on F1 in my lifetime. There may have been the odd one off. He partnered up with James Hunt after he retired so probably the 1980 season, then Jonathan Palmer from 1993.

James Hunt was brilliant. He said what he thought and didn't care if they didn't like it, usually ripping into Rene Arnoux, Phillipe Alliot or Andrea de Cesaris (or de Crasheris as he called him!) for driving like tools!

Just had a quick look on Wikipedia and it seems you're right. I don't remember hearing Palmer at all during the 1996 season.
