'BBC considering ditching Legard'

Bring back Allen, I always liked him on ITV before anyway. Don't know this Cox chap, but I'd be equally happy with Crofty coming over from 5live. He has a good voice for commentary - he's your knowledgable mate down the pub as opposed to Legard's weird shouty bloke in the corner.

I must be just about the only person here who doesn't mind Legard. Please please please don't bring Fathead back. Fathead knows the sport inside out but is a useless commentator.

I'll take say what you see over "Go! Go! Go" every time.

I don't remember Allen ever saying "Go! Go! Go!", he would just say "GOOO!". You're confusing him with Murray?

Yep, I've quite enjoyed Crofty on R5Live for the Practice.

Is it synched with what's happening on TV?

:D Of course it is, been an option for ages now. When any on track action is occurring just press the red button and you can choose between normal commentary, 5 Live commentary or no commentary. There even used to be CBBC commentary which was quite hilarious at times.

You also often get driver interviews more quickly on the 5 Live feed. Lee McKenzie and Ted Kravitz report to both commentary teams at different points iirc.

I tried the five live feed for a race once, and just found it too descriptive. As somebody said above when complaining about Legard, I don't really need to be told what I can see happening, and being a radio broadcast, that's exactly what they're doing on five live for most of it.

James Allen was just crap!

He's a great journalist, but his commentary box performance....nngh. He'd never been that great at it IMO (even allowing for Murray being a hard act to follow) but all through 2007 he just got more and more annoying until the low point of Brazil. F1 Rejects summed it up pretty well in fact:

Jamie and Enoch @ F1Rejects said:
We would also be glad if Hamilton has missed out on his historic rookie title for another reason, if it meant that a nice big humble pie-shaped dent has been cast into the unbearable 'Lewisteria' that has got worse and worse as the season has progressed. There was no better example of this in Brazil than the ITV commentary team, whose feed we get here in Australia. James Allen and Martin Brundle are decidedly pro-British at the best of times, but here they took hyperbole to a brand new level.

After lap 1, Allen was reassuring viewers (or himself) of Hamilton's masterful overtaking prowess. When the rookie dropped further back, the race became Lewis' title mission, as if the championship was his to win or lose and for Alonso or Raikkonen to simply luck into if Hamilton failed. Every passing move was a case of "scything past", regardless of the fact that all of Lewis' victims, especially Rubens Barrichello, were generous. Even the reliable Brundle convinced himself that Lewis didn't need to make his final stop!

By contrast, the lack of excitement that greeted Raikkonen's race and title victory was palpable. It had been one-eyed commentary at its most annoying, and for that we award the ITV crew the 'Reject of the Race' award. After a year when nearly everything went Hamilton's way, for neutral observers (or for us who know that supporting Mark Webber is a masochistic endeavour) it was a relief to see the 'Lewisteria' bubble being burst, and one hopes the FIA allows it to stay that way.

Fantastic!!!

I do remember James Allen being EXTREMELY pro-Team Hamilton (as it was then, when Hamilton was with his father).

Its just, what they said about Brundle is very amusing.

Legard is dire.
Can't stand the way he starts shouting about totally non consequential events.
Only to have Martin(legend) calmly pointing out nothing unusual is actually happening.
At least Eddie is amusing if rubbish. But Legard is just annoying lol

The only thing more predictable than Legard declaring every five minutes that Mark Webber, Bruno Senna or the Safety Car is "on a charge", is that whenever he ventures an opinion as to what he thinks is happening on the track, Brundle immediately discredits it. :D

He does need to go and I'm glad the Beeb appear to agree, but they cannot replace him with James Allen. Must not!
