BBC possibly to drop F1 coverage...

If you ignore the HD channel which is only available on Sky, the SD channel is comparable.

On VM its £22.50 for the Sky Sports pack.
On Sky its £20 for the Sky Sports pack.

If you're on the crap package, which I am, it's up to £28 I think.
I like F1.
I don't like men running around kicking balls, or waving sticks or throwing egg shaped things in the mud.
£28 a month is exceptionally poor value for 1 channel that'll be useful for only 2 weekends out of the month.

Seems you're not really allowed to be disappointed at how F1 has went though. You just have to shut up of get Sky... Great choices, glad they gave the fans so many options!

Nobody in their right mind is going to pay ~£30 for a single channel. Therefore considering what else you get with the package needs to be taken into account.

I currently watch BBC1, BBC2 and BBC4 with some BBC News. That is pretty much it. I have had SKY before but didn't really watch much over those channels.

I am a big F1 fan and as it stands for me to watch all the F1 next season will cost me £30 per month and I won't watch anything else for that money other than F1.

Is that for RTL? Isn't that SD only, voiced in German with adverts during the race and mean you have to listen to an out of sync R5L for commentary which no longer has Crofty or Davidson?

Hardly win win...

I'd happily watch a race in SD voiced in German, with adverts. Than not watch it at all. Unfortunately I'm in rented house so unable to go for this option. :(

Commentary is irrelevant, tv feed + noise from the track is enough. Learning German is the better option than urinating cash away down the Sky drain.

The other option isn't to not watch it at all, its to watch 10 races live and the rest as highlights on the BBC.

Watching half the races as HD highlights sounds like a much better option to me than all the effort you need to go to to get an advert filled German SD RTL feed setup.

The HD stream is encrypted (according to Duke), so using the 'dish in the garden' approach will only get you SD.

You should check for yourself instead of asking and hoping other people have got it right things can change.

"DVB-T Free in Germany, DVB-S Free-to-air on Astra 19.2°E 16:9 feed - HDTV feed confirmed"
So I will take the FREE-To- Air on Astra as FREE.

I'm going on the fact that Duke currently has a dish in his garden pointed at Astra. If things have changed since he tested it fair enough, but how about not being a **** about it, and instead just asking him to check for us?

Duke, if you get a moment, could you please confirm if HD RTL is available for free using your setup? Thank you.

HD+ provides a broadcast platform from satellites at the Astra 19.2°E position, independent from TV operators, for channels outside of the established pay-TV networks, and requires a dedicated receiver or an HD+ conditional access module and viewing card

HD+ Channels

Tele5 HD
Comedy Central HD
kabel eins HD
N24 HD
Nickelodeon HD
ProSieben HD
RTL Television HD
RTL 2 HD
Sat.1 HD
sixx HD
SPORT1 HD
Vox HD

The HD+ channels are encrypted using Nagravision encryption, and reception and decryption is only possible with certain combinations of receiver and conditional access module (CAM).

RTL Channel on Satellite

For those that don't want Sky/VM, one option I've found is to watch the German RTL channel with the BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra commentary alongside. RTL is free to air and covers both the qualifying and race in full. It is only free for the SD feed and I think it is £100 a year to watch it in HD. To pick up this channel, you need a satellite dish pointed at 'Astra 19.2E'. I gather you should be able to re-align an existing Sky dish to this sat (although some parts of the UK may need a larger dish), assuming you don't use it for normal Freesat channels, or you can purchase a second dish for it. Even with a different receiver box included, the whole install can be done well within a £100 one off cost. The problem when I tried it was the sync of Radio 5 Live being out by a few seconds and also the commentary team on 5 Live isn't as good as before.
