BBC possibly to drop F1 coverage...

Why dont you oblige us all, by telling me what additional unnecessary reasons why I am not watching F1. Id like to know

No offence to you Skeeter, but your constant questioning leads to a lot of people feeling they need to justify their position past the point of "I don't want to pay for live F1, so I'm not going to pay for it" - just look at the last few pages for your antics...

I don't think it will fail, I just hope it does not bring in anything like the number of viewers it hopes.
It's the only way they'd look at offering other ways to subscribe to it.

Sky and F1 as a sport do not care if I watch.

Guys, not got a clue what you all are rambling on about.

I have a Sky HD box but no subscription as I don't watch tv except bbc2 for topgear. How much would it cost for me to watch F1 on sky.

Thanks

Whether you meant it or not, your post implied (at least to me and MissCheif) that not being able to watch all the races live would make the sport impossible to follow, and that because of that you would cancel your plans to watch a race at the track.

This struck me as both a bit extreme, and an over reaction.

If that's not what you mean't then I'm sorry that the discussion that followed happened, but surely you can see how it looked to me?

This thread has become full of people posting unnessasary reasons to not want to buy Sky which just aren't needed.

The BBC coverage is going to be perfectly adequate for your average viewer to be able to follow F1 enough to understand what's going on, and then maybe want to go and watch a race at the track. I get that people are bitter, but surely you can see that some of the stuff people are saying is just an over reaction or spiteful speculation?

Assuming you cant just add the HD pack to the basic 'Freesat' style non subscription package (which I don't think you can) then it will cost £20 for the Entertainment Pack and £10.25 for the HD pack, so £30.25.

No I dont see it like that; perhaps I should have used wont instead of cant, but I thought it was quite obvious that if I wont pay for Sky (in whatever guise) on the main basis of the cost, then not cancelling a trip solely for a F1 weekend would seem counter-intuitive, if not idiotic.

As I wont be watching all the races live, I can see my love for the sport waining so most likely Ill watch it when I can rather than watching it religiously highlights or not. The same thing happened when the Premiership went to Sky and look, I catch MotD as often as possible and see the European games when they are on - this is no different...

To me its far more of a leap to come to your conclusion than it is to mine.

As much as I love F1 it isn't worth £360/year.

Shoddy Internet streaming for me it is then.

Thanks for reply.

Then it was a misunderstanding. To me it read that you thought the BBC coverage would be insufficient for people to follow the sport properly, which I'm sure you will agree is not going to be the case.

Id agree, but I can understand people viewpoints as this is quite the paradiagm shift when it comes to watching live F1; the same thing happened when Sky got the rights to the Premiership though - thats how big the change is and is hard not to see why people are embittered or feel entitled...

The pub argument is a bit of an odd one though. A lot of races won't be on at times that would suit being shown in a pub. And have any of you actually tried to watch F1 in a pub? It's hard work. The 1 time I did it I was constantly texting a mate to figure out what was going on.

That said though, I imagine filling a pub with F1 fans and having the race on with the commentary available would be a right laugh. Who's up for it? :p

I only mention pub viewing as many people compare football on Sky to F1 now being on Sky.
I don't see it as being similar as it's still extremely easy to see football that is shown on Sky if you have not signed up to the service.

OcUK pub F1 meet, we'd still all be on the forum, communicating via the race thread... :D

football and f1 are on at the same time a lot, id liek to say f1 would take priority but we all know it wont

Everyone sat in silence on smart phones quoting the guy sat next to them. :D

That said, I reckon an OcUK F1 Pub meet could be good, but I think we are spread to far across the country for it to work.

Not to mention finding a pub that would give over an area on a sunday afternoon to a bunch of guys (and girls) to watch F1.

Are you in a VM area?

Most landlords wont have an issue with getting VM wired in or a dish put up.

I own a leasehold flat. The freeholder flat out refused to allow even a communal dish.

We went through a right to manage process at the end of last year and stuck a communal dish up when we upgraded the aerial for the bit switchoff.

Problems are not with private landlords. The issues are normally with freeholders who very often will refuse permission.

Similar but different problem here. I live in a council flat in an area that doesn't get Virgin Media. Our block aerial, while set up for Sky, cannot receive Sky HD. So even if I were willing to pay Murdoch's phone-hacking hatemongering monopolists for F1 - which I am not - I would still have no choice but to pay a mint for an inferior service to that which I received last year on the BBC.

Honestly, I'd prefer a deal where the BBC didn't get to show any races live but could screen a full repeat of every race at, say, 9pm on race day. I could avoid result spoilers that long.

:(, that sucks.

Ok, this worries me a bit. What do you mean it can't recieve Sky HD? Do you have a Sky dish setup and wired in? I ask because I have a communal dish on my building with a single feed to each of the 6 flats. I have tested it and it works with an old SD Sky box just fine, and I didn't think SkyHD required a new dish (you can upgrade to SkyHD by them just posting you a new box). Am I going to be screwed when the guy comes to install it and I can't get HD?

Edit: Less panic now... Sky FAQ doesn't mention any special requirements for HD:

Will I need to have a new minidish set-up?
Only if you're new to Sky. If you're a new customer you'll need to have a minidish fitted, which we'll do for you when you join us. Existing customers upgrading to Sky+HD can continue using their current minidish. If you live in a flat with a communal dish, you’ll need to check you have dual satellite feeds to support the Sky+ functionality.

I already know that with a single feed I will have to enable the single feed mode, and wont be able to record one channel while watching another.

Whats happening with adverts?

Are SKY keeping the actual race advert free?

Because if they broke up the race, I would cancel my SKY subscription.

I actually have SKY, but hate the fact they have it, the BBC were doing a fine job of it.
