Bebox or Be connection problem?

I have been getting a lot of disconnection as well recently.. i have pretty much had a perfect service from Be until recently. Since Xmas i have been getting a lot of random connection losses.. It usually recoonects a few moments later but in the mean time i have lost connection to any game servers i maybe connected too..

I also seem to be getting a lot of ping spikes in games between 100~150 ms jumps in my ping.

Here are my stats for my BeBox:

I have also done a Quiet line test.. but seems fine no noise.

Any ideas?

You have quite a few errors and connection losses on your line. Have you bought anything electrical recently? If you have it may be causing interference with the phone line if it runs close to it.

Have you contacted Be at all?

I'd also say for your connection stats you should be syncing much higher too, at my parents house they sync at 14mb with 38dB. So i'd be expecting at least 16-17Mb from your connection.

There is currently a thread saying about how cutting wires works going on at the moment, have a look at that and see if that helps you. If you have extentions in your house disconnect them and run the router from the master socket to see if you increase the speed.

I've got a lot of CRC and HEC errors on my line, it drops out at least once a day and usually not until i'm using it although not all the time :(

Goddamit, i need a new router, whats a good one for BE?

Ok, first thing to do is to goto your BT master socket, its normally bigger than one of the house extention boxes unless its an older one, it will have a BT symbol on it. If you have the newer, larger box then unscrew the front and remove the faceplate. You'll see that this connected into another normal phone socket behind it, plug your filter into there and then your router into that. If that improves your connection then it proves that its your house extentions at fault and are picking up signals somewhere around the house.

If that was the case then get a filtered faceplate for the front of the BT box and wire in your extentions to that, or if you don't use the extentions then unwire them all together.

If that didn't fix it then thensecond thing i would do is increase from SNR margin to see if that improves the connection, you can do can do this by contacting Be* through the web ticket system, ask for the highest they can do which is either 12 or 15dB. Or you can do it using the DMT tool, do a search on the forum and they'll be link somewhere.

Run that config for 24 hours to see if the figures are similar. By doing this your connection speed will drop a lot, just be prepared as its needed for testing.

got my dg834g delivered yesterday, setup was a breeze, posting via it now. so far so good - we'll see how it pans out! not getting any sync speed increase or decrease - but then it was more stability that i was after either way. fingers crossed!

I have contacted BE they told me to try the master socket.. which i am about to do and said somthing maybe causing interference.. Not sure what tho as i havnt bought anything new that could be causing it..

EDIT Ill post my finding once i have moved my router accross the room to the Master socket..

I think you're about to find your problem lol, general rule of thumb is to use the router only from the master socket. Expect a nice speed jump :)

OK here is my findings:

On the extension: 8123kbps Down / 934kbps Up

Master Socket: 12309kbps Down / 867kbps Up

... So you've proven that the master socket is the way forward. But i have 2 problems with this.. 1 Nothing reaches the master socket expect wireless. (Ie no xbox or HTPC). Is there anyway to get the same quality line through the extension or at least nearly the same?

Joe.

PS here is my DSL info after pluggin into the master socket:

Thats quite an increase! But i do see one problem and thats your upload speed.

Your upload is usually based in the lower end of the frequency close to where your telephone calls are made so you should be at the full 1.3Mb instead of 800k. So thats where your interference is, contact be and tell them you've gone through the motions of connection to the master socket etc and tell when to run a line test as your upload speed isn't what it should be.

I expect thats the reason for your disconnections, if you look at Loss of Signal and Error Seconds that proves it. I'd expect that you'll be able to get more out of your connection aswell. I'd put it down to bad cabling in the exchange.

For getting internet to all the computers in your house i would suggest something like a wireless repeater but the wireless on the Bebox is quite shocking (normally drops from the max your connection can do to half of what it can do). As some people have done in this thread get a router such as a netgear DG834GT and then think about getting something like a linksys WRT54GL. You can flash the linksys to act as a wireless bridge and connect to your GT over wireless at the master socket while transmitting to the rest of the house. The GL would have to be flashed with custom firmware to do this, it sounds all like a big operation but its well worth it in the end if you need to spread wireless signal around the house.

I actually have a WRT54GL in its box next door.. (used to use it on my cable connection at my old house) I have also got a custom firmware on it for QOS controlling etc.. So i guess all id need is a decent ADSL 2+ modem .. but anyway im gonig to give BE ring and see if there is anything else they can do.

Thanks.

i've been getting quite a few disconnects with my Be line and lagging out in games
It sounds like you got your problems sorted but I just wanted to mention I had similar problems but just in Team Fortress 2, luckily there were two threads in the BE Gaming forums where I found a fix. . .

  • Voice communication issues in PS2 games online
  • Read before posting Fix for most CSS-Steam issues
You have probably read them etc but thought I would mention it just in case.

Post your Bebox stats
Sorry to make you work some more but is there any chance you can cast your beady eye on these Be-Box stats pls? I have no idea what any of it means but you seem to be fluent in BeBoxian

This is just the basic BE 8MB package, does everything look normal?

I am thinking of upgrading to 24MB but not sure if its possible.

Thanks in advance :)

Heh, i'm no where near an expert i've just got two Be connections, one at home and one at uni so i know what to mess around with lol.

If you're lucky then i would expect you to go up to about 11-12Mb but i did notice that you've run something like DMT tool to reduce your downstream SNR, am i correct in that?

Have you gone through the usual trying at the test socket with no extentions? (i may say this everytime but really its worth it!)

Hi thanks for reply, no I am not doing anything with any 'DMT tool'? Just setup the box a few months ago as per instructions

No I didn't do that, my main master socket is downstairs next to my front door, a BT engineer ran a cable direct from that to the one extention upstairs. I'm not sure how I would go about linking the Be-Box direct to the master socket as that would mean setting the PC up in the porch kinda next to the hung up jackets and shoes :D

If I could get a really long lead (prolly about 15 foot) and connect that from the master box direct to my Be-Box would that be any different from using the plumbed in BT extention? (I doubt it?).

Hmm ok just seems strange that your whole SNR profile hasn't changed to 3/3. The higher the number the less frequency from the wire it will use, this can benefit people with connections that drop out.

The extention the BT guy put in would be a single wire that loosing signal over a short distance. I wish they'd start using some high quality network cable as it wouldn't matter if there was an extention then as it wouldn't loose you any speed.

Have you not got wireless on your pc? Using a long extention from a shop would be the same as the one to going upstairs.

Feel like buying a really long network cable? Lol, i'm quite sad i think i would actually consider it for a fast internet speed. Download speeds mean everything :D
