BenQ XL2730Z Freesync Owners Thread

I want this monitor as it will match my XL2430T which I really like but want a higher res.

Although, reading the last few pages, it all seems to be about RMAing it as it doesn't work properly?

I'd like to try freesync too :p
I ordered the 2430T a few days ago thinking that I didn't need a freesync monitor any time soon but today I thought that I may have made a mistake and will regret it.

So I ordered the 2730Z even though I didn't want to spend as much but I thought that it would be best to try it out.

Everyone says Freesync/Gsync is so smooth? I wouldn't say my current gaming time is not a smooth and pleasurable experience?

I'm looking forward to trying it out, especially having the two side by side to compare but I can't see there being a massive difference surely?

@Davanius Yeah, the last 3days using my old 2410T were bit of a shock.
Everything is so smooth with freesync.

Also buy another cable DP 1.2 compatible. The one coming with the monitor is not.

Are some of the reported issues with this monitor down to the cable then?

A bit silly for benq to ship without a proper cable.

Will order one Panos. Thank you. :)

Unfortunately in my case looks like is the monitor. :(

Cable came, nothing, the screen has bad flickering both with DVI and even worst with DP cable. Downgraded the drivers to 15.11.1 catalyst just in case, however nothing. My good old trusty 2410T works fine, the 2730Z pear shape. Even put an ancient 650Ti I have lurking around to try. Nothing. The screen is flickering.

Pretty annoyed atm, given the cost of the monitor, and that is only 7 months old.

Anyhow, tomorrow I will start the process of returning it for fix or replacement or (just fingers crossing) refunding (doubt it). Not very happy tbh.

Sorry to hear about that. My monitor should be here tomorrow so I will post back with my experiences.

Edit: I now have the monitor and I'm very happy with it. No problems at all.

I am using the dp cable that came with it until my other arrives but as I said, no issues.

No bleeding or dead pixels to report. It's my first 144hz monitor and also my first 1440p one so quite a lot to take in.

Is very nice monitor, and many cannot comprehend that has nothing to do with the typical "TN" panel they bash about. Colours & quality are superb, and that damn headphones bracket something I will always praise.

Around page 4 here, is a nice set of settings you should use, making the best of the monitor colours.

Mine was only 5 months old.
RMA took an age, so hope yours goes better. Mind you mine was at a bad time (Black Friday) so that didn't help. Then there was Christmas. But it's only been 1½ months so far so hoping they'll have it sorted soon.

Bit annoyed that with the monitor being more than 21 days old the replacement would be a refurbished monitor. As I've mentioned before, I did complain about that. Not sure if it was related to my complaint but they have told me that the replacement they sent was a new unit not refurbished.

Hi all, i have just put together my sim racing rig and am having trouble working out how to mount the monitor.
When i take it off the stand i see 4 screws which i assume is where you connect it to the mounting plate, the mounting plate is too large to fit in the square although the holes do match up, i wondered if i just need longer screws or should the whole back cover of the monitor come off to allow access to mounting points.
The mounting kit came with the rig and is supposed to fit various sized monitors but i cant seem to work it out and dont want to damage the monitor.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I thought the mounting plate on the back is VESA standard. If not try to buy a backplate adapter that fits connecting all 3.

I'm posting this to help anyone else with the same issue as me. I'll repeat the details of my problem here.

My issues with this monitor

390X with XL2730Z running 1440p, 144Hz via Display port. I encountered frequent black screens while on the desktop, or in games. The black screen would last for 1-2 seconds, then return to where it left off. The PC wouldn't crash, audio would still play while the screen was black etc.

I also got occasional flickering while on the desktop - a white line near the top of the screen that lasted 0.1 seconds if that.

These issues only occurred while running via DP. I obviously had to run via DP to run 1440p 144Hz and to take advantage of Freesync, so using HDMI or DVI was not an option.

These problems were quite annoying - as I could be playing a competitive game and at a crucial moment I'd get a 2 second black screen - as you could imagine this is rather rage inducing, so this had to be fixed.

What I did to try and fix it

I ordered a 2M Accell DP cable to try and fix it - this did reduce the frequency of the black screens and flickering, but they still occurred. Note that the DP cable included with the monitor (Amphenol 2M) is indeed DP certified, though the Accell cables were highly recommended, thus I thought it was worth a go.

I tried running my 390X at full 3D clock speeds. This also reduced the frequency of black screens/flickering, though they still occurred.

I tried overvolting and undervolting my 390X. I also tried underclocking it. This made absolutely no difference.

I tried the 390X in another motherboard with a different CPU. Same issue occuered.

I tried the monitor on another GPU, a 7950 via mini DP. The same issue occurred on the desktop. I couldn't really test in games as the 7950 couldn't run freesync and produced too low FPS to bother testing.

The final solution

I decided to try a 1M display port cable. I saw that AMDmatt was recommending this cable to several people in various threads, though there is only one place in the UK stocking this (that I could find) and they were out of stock until 27th of December.

I also saw that AMD are recommending a less than 2M DP cable for their next generation GPU's that will use DP 1.3:

NvV7i9C.jpg

I understand they are talking about next gen GPU's with DP 1.3, though this made me curious as to why they were specifically recommending a <2M cable.

The 1M Accell cable arrived on the 28th of December, and I'm happy to report that I've not had a single black screen or flickering issue since. I've used the PC for a good fews hours every day since, so I'm 100% confident that this is a permanent fix.

Hopefully this might help some other poor soul who's having these frustrating problems out there.

Here's the exact model number of the cable:

"Accell B142C-003B" DisplayPort to DP Latching Cable
Hopefully OCUK will stock the Accell range in the future, it was a nightmare finding it in stock anywhere.

Now that my issues with this monitor are resolved, I'm extremely happy with my purchase. The monitor is simply excellent, 1440P 144Hz Freesync is stunning

Just an FYI.

Had a reply yesterday from BenQ. Was asked to provide a video, however while the flickering is there, especially at the bottom right corner, isn't clear how bad it is.

Today was asked to provide them with with more information and
if you have any chance to try the monitor with a different source and can you tell me if the flickering is more noticeable at higher refresh rate or at 60Hz as well?

So here are my findings. Hell had to dig from upstairs the ancient but trusty 650Ti!!!!

Hi xxxxxxxx,

Thank you very much.

Arrived home and run the following tests over the last hour and half.

On 295X2 2560x1440 @ 60hz, 120 & 144 connected via DP is flickering especially at the bottom right corner, where the colour is washed out. (has a glow).
On 295X2 2560x1440 @ 60hz, 120 connected via DVI is flickering bit less than with DP but the bottom right corner is prominent still.
On 650Ti 2560x1440 @ 60, 120hz (cannot go higher) connected with DVI, is flickering bit less but still prominent on lower right corner. (clean installation of drivers, removing completely all the AMD drivers from the system)
On Acer Aspire V5-122P laptop, AMD A6-1450M, Windows 8.1 @ 2560x1440 @ 60hz (cannot go higher) connected over DP, is flickering badly as per above DP connection.
(video attached on previous link is the one with the green background, you can see how prominent the flickering is)

DP connections were tested both with a brand new mDP to DP 1m long, which is DP 1.2 certified cable (same brand as the cable you provide). And the DP cable you provide with the monitor alongside the Sapphire mDP to DP converter (the 295X2 has only mDP connectors).
Tested the cables & adapter on my work PC they both work fine on the 2560x1440 and 4K monitors I have access there.

Refresh rate, is more prominent at 60hz on DP connection, compared to 60hz on DVI. However at 144hz is bad. As stated before, the bottom right corner is flickering a lot and the whole screen looks like a fine checkered mesh.

Logged on BIOS also, just in case, where the resolution is pretty low (1080p?). While on the dark background the picture looks alright if you look closely on the bottom right corner can still see flickering.

Drivers used. (with complete wipes)
AMD Catalyst 15.11.1, 15.6, 15.7.1 & Crimson 15.12 on the 295X2 and Catalyst 14.10 the netbook has. (never bothered to upgrade it).
NVIDIA 358.91 (default W10 driver), and 361.43

I do not have any other device to test the monitor unfortunately :( and the videos do not show how bad the flickering is.
The XL2410T which temporary using, has no issue with any of the cards, however can only test the DVI connectors, doesn't have DP.

If you have any queries, please let me know.

Kind Regards

Panos

I marked bold the items for here to take notice.

Lets hope they come back with any findings. Tbh if they tell me to do something to fix it, I have no issue with. Is bigger hassle to send the monitor away :(

And tomorrow I will test it with the Nano :D

Update. After a week of deliberation, BenQ accepts that they need to create an RMA for the monitor, after various tests I was asked to perform and only after I told them that the monitor is flickering with just the power cable on and nothing else.
Whats the point to test it on graphic cards, laptops & other devices after quite a few video recordings also.... lol...

See how it goes, but greatly missed now, week 2 :(

Started mine mid-November, hoping it'll be solved some time soon, closing in on 2 months now.

BenQ's customer service seems to be really poor in my experience.
Also, I often find things go wrong just after the warranty has expired, but with BenQ it seems things go wrong after around 6 months, so at least you have warranty left and can look forward to a refurbished unit, eventually.

Pity really as when it's working the screens not bad.

I bought this 5M cable Ugreen Displayport to Displayport DP v1.2

Been running at 144hz, not had any black screen issues, did have some flickering, mainly during the loading screen of Battlefront, that seems to have gone with the latest AMD Driver. Still get the faint flickering now and again but nothing that's an issue, hopefully will be resolved in future driver updates.

I got an email today that some time between now and the 22/01 a refub monitor will arrive and the courier will trade it with mine.

Asked the guy who handles my case, to let me know 24h prior when they plan to send the courier so I can arrange to work that day from home.

Once I convinced them to raise the RMA they seemed to move pretty quickly.
They just sent me a French monitor complete with non-UK power cable.

I received the monitor on the 9th December, informed them of the issue o nthe 10th, then on the 15th they told me they'd get a power cable sent out. I'm still waiting...

So just a thought to check that as soon as you get chance, just in case.

They did tell me they actually sent me a new monitor rather than a refurb though.
