Best mATX conroe capable board for sensible money

Whats wrong with the Asus P5VD2-MX mATX motherboard? Considering its half the price of the PB5, but it still supports conroe. Does it not come with any overclocking options of something?

No working PCI lock, therefore overclocking is very limited. Board usually reaches it's limits around 10-20Mhz over the stock FSB.

No, the answer to the question you actually asked is 'There is nothing wrong with it. It's a very good motherboard, but the ASRock has an Intel chipset and that's likely to be faster. more stable and a better long-term bet than the VIA chipset on the ASUS'.

Cheers. The ASRock does look good for only a tenner more.

And my answer is:

"It's late and i've spent most of the day on the train. It's not my fault if I can't read properly and thought he was asking about the P5B-VM, not the P5VD2."

:o

I know the feeling. I completely misread someone else's post and had to go back and heavily edit earlier

Despite me saying i'm going to be ordering soon many times in this thread, I haven't yet put in my order!

Still waiting for that perfect mATX board, i'm so desperate to get the system in a Sugo or similar that i'm even considering going AM2 or 939 just to get the board I want.

My next move is to wait for Anandtech's roundup on mATX boards. It should be with us in the next 4-5 days, and i'll make my decisions based on that.

As i've said, I won't use Conroe if Intel aren't going to provide suitable boards. I doubt i'd notice any real-world difference between an X2 and a Conroe anyway, especially if I have an X1800XT in my case or similar.

same here i have a sugo with a matx board and a amd 3200 want to upgrade but do i go 4000 single 3800x2 or conroe 6300 is it

i game a fair bit you see and the conroe only has 1.86 ghz

but my current cpu is 2.0 i dont overclock so is that cheap asus a good board if you just want stability

how high are the intel coolers will they fit under the psu

is a conroe worth it if you dont overclock

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the questions

I think that's a totally valid set of statements. Have you looked at the EVGA S939 mATX motherboard. It's NForce 4 with proper 2 x 16x PCIe slots and it clocks very well. It's about £85 delivered and that, paired up with a nice Athlon 64 would make a really excellent gaming machine.

Yes, but I think the ASRock is better value.

Yes, the stock cooler will fit, but I would suggest you look at something better like a Silverstone Nitrogon NT03 or a Thermaltake Blue Orb.

Given the gaming performance available from an X2 system at the price point, possibly not. You can get a retail packaged Athlon 64 4000 for £111 at the moment. That's a very fast processor for the money. Even looking at X2, you get a 3800+ retail for E6300 money, so if you are not overclocking, you might be better off going AMD, but the resale will be MUCH harder.

Abits New Board Here , best Matx ive seen to date

I was just going by reviews. 20% isnt bad I suppose. I heard it doesnt have much in the way of voltage adjustment?

No, it has about 4 large step-ups on a menu, not a variable option like you usually get. So you have the choice of not applying enough volts or having a brown-trouser moment when it doesn't boot at the next step up.

Would you need to overclock an X2 3800 to get it to outperform an E6300 in games? I'm not sure you would.

I did look into that board, however i'm unlikely to go for something like that as at a guess, the cooling in an SLi system would be a total nightmare.
Anyway, if I was going to go multi-GPU, it'd be Crossfire, not SLi ;)

Zalman CNPS8000. Quiet and low profile. Anything using a 120mm fan like the Blue Orb will require a slight modification to the case or fins. I think Yewen was/is in that situation and devised a nice mod to overcome the problem. Me, i'm not brave enough to start modding things! :D

You would. E6300 at stock is approx X2 4400 at stock.

I know exactly where Yewen got that case from ;) and I was running the same Blue orb in there that I'm using now. Motherboards vary.
