What are the updates like for the steam device, when you update it does it wipe/cause issues with tweaks or if you have dual booted it?

No update has caused an issue for me apart from RPCS3 which I needed to update something on so it worked again.
Dual boot I have Win10 pro on an SD card so keep it seperate to the Steam Deck SSD

Dreamcast and NAOMI is easy, just setup using Emudeck and I use Emulation Station DE as the only frontend.
Sega Model 3 I use SuperModel Assistant with Proton Experimental set.
Sega Mode 2 also requires proton and specific Proton setup in Protontricks. e.g. directx version, vcrun 2010. Then you need to setup the shortcut target and start in paths and basic launch options.

Or instead of individual entries, you use another frontend like Emulation Station DE or the main emulator. I use WinUAE for Amiga because PUAE in Emulation station isnt as easy to manage IMO

Most games (non Steam) need Proton Experimental to properly work, some older stuff does need tweaking, but thats part of the fun!

Here's a guide on Sega Model 2. No ROMs or game mentioned here of course only info on setup :)

thanks again bud, thats model 2 working on it perfect, deffo miles better than the saturn emulator :D

For those with the SteamDeck, how do old school DOS games play in Retroarch, are they a no go?
Depends what DOS games, DOSBox-pure (0.9.7) in Retroarch plays quite well. Controls you need to reconfigure of course and games can be totally different.
You can also setup hardware emulation in PCem, I've built a DOS era 486 DX4/100 and a Pentium MMX200 with Voodoo1 and AWE32 for 9X games on Windows 95.

It's better to try and get games running natively though (well, Proton which is Wine) Thats the joy of the Steam Deck, its versatile enough to say "I want to play that game from 1985" then "I want to try Unreal 5 engine testing" Basically, you're not limited really.
Some examples

Unreal 5

PCem

BeamNG Drive

Thanks for the indepth post @Guest2 . I just assumed you wouldn't be able to install DOS games as they're not purchasable through Steam but it looks like you can just use the OS. Wondered if it would all be locked down.

Getting harder and harder to say no to one. Hopefully be a good deal on Black Friday.

No probs :)
Yeh, you can use many different methods

Retroarch and EmulationStationDE
Other emulator with or without a frontend
Copying a folder directly to the SteamOS desktop and running it with (or without) a compatibility layer like Proton of which there are many versions.
Using something like Lutris with or without direct plugins to sites like GOG and other launchers
Using PCem and OS of choice
Stick Windows 10/11 on the SSD or like me a MicroSD card just with Win10 on it.

It's a great device to test if X works... but that's also its downfall! I've spend probably more time testing than playing. Though now I tend to just fire up a game when I feel like it. WinUAE and AmigaVision is my current go to

One other quite important thing to note.
If you setup individual games, it makes control setup a lot easier.

E.g. You have an emulator, say Dosbox which has mutiple games inside. You need to use that program or frontend to configure control layouts for the game which might be a pain or not possible at all.
Having an individual game, you just press the Steam button and update the Steam layout (or use a community one) for that game.

Its not a one solution fits all though, because something like WinUAE works well with one layout for the most part. Trying to play something like TFX or Gunship 2000 on a Steam deck (no keyboard plugged in) is going to be difficult. You can sort of use the Steam deck virtual keyboard by pressing Steam button and X, but it sucks.

Atomic bomberman for example though i've configured left stick and L1 to player 1 and right stick and R1 to player 2. Makes for some interesting 2 player gaming :)

You could just clone your drive then logout of steam on his if its logged in with your account - easier than settings everything up again

i installed lutris and got that to install the emulator but the corefonts are missing and i got them manually but the folder im supposed to put them in is missing, apparntly a recent update screwed up lutris downloading corefonts :(

ive never used linux before so a bit stumped at the moment, ah i was so close, lutris messed up and i can load the emulator and all games show up but the menus are just blank boxes and if i load a game i get a black screen and a mouse cursor :p

Haha I bought a 256GB one last night. Says it should come in 2-3 weeks.

Just in time too as my RG35xx seemingly is losing its charge over night, works fine when charged up but seems to drain itself overnight. Tried a different battery and the same issue so guessing there is a problem with the board :(

oh dad got his one 512 gfig model a day before trhe new oled ones got anounced and valve are repfunding the diferrence in price and my one is a week out the window ans possibly refunding the difference as well, im trying it as 100 quid difference is big for me, if i dont try :)

Cant you just ask for a straight swap of the 512 for a 512 OLED? Or pay the difference to go 512 LCD > 1TB OLED.
I thought the 512 LCD was around the price of the 1TB OLED - £569

Edit, yes the 512 LCD original price was $649. The 1TB OLED is also $649. $549.00 for OLED 512
Valve are really out to screw the competition over :D
