Best Retro Handheld

Well it seems my RG35xx plus is borked and I've hardly used it. Stuck on the Anbernic load screen. Tried resetting, reseating SD card etc. Seems to have a full charge. I'm guessing its the SD Card?

Yeah just reflash the SD card, that normally sorts the stuck on boot issue.

Or open the back up and disconnect the battery for 2 minutes.

Are you using the sd card which came with it or a branded one as the includes ones are known to be of pretty poor quality, step 1 of all the setup guides is to replace with a decent one.

Yes indeed. I've already flashed it with the 16gb no roms image and it works which is a relief. Just getting the 64gb image and will be getting a decent SanDisk card too.

I'm sort of tempted by the "new" RG405V but it's a bit more pricey because of the extra bells and whistles. But I'm swayed by the novelty of maybe playing DC and even some GC games on essentially a Gameboy looking thing.

Edit: having looked at a review though the M does look quite a bit more practical...

Edit again: having weighed up the pros and cons I ultimately pulled the trigger on a RG353V which comes in a fetching purple colour.

Considerations are: form factor is nice. The 405V is a bit bulky. I think a lot of games will actually look better on the smaller screen. Obviously it's a bit cheaper, too.

Looks like it can still do a decent amount of 3d stuff as well (maybe with some tinkering) with some helpful analogue sticks. Was a bit tempted by the slightly cheaper VS but RAM and also those models are more boring looks wise.

Because it's cool, retro styling and at a price where you'd think "it's worth a punt!"

Plus it is actually fully functional and decent in real world use. The buttons feels great, screen is good, the only issue is the stock OS which is easily fixed (20min job on the computer with a new SD card).
 
Got the RG353V, very happy with it. Crash Bandicoot 2 (PS1) works flawlessly, even Sonic Adventure 2 is constant 30FPS+ with good audio albeit minor graphical bugs. Obviously 2D stuff "just works" including more challenging stuff like Yoshi's Island for SNES.
