Big 4 now the Big 5?

Martins was a regular for Inter Milan and Owen has proven himself at every level there is in football, regardless of whether clubs wanted to pay the price for him at the time he is undoubtably a top player.
Martins was not wanted by Inter any more or by any other top club and Owen had no choice but to join Newcastle. Im not talking about whether players are good or not but Newcastle's ability to attract top players ahead of other clubs; there is no way Owen would have joined Newcastle had he had a future at Real or another top club came in for him.

If we keep our players fit and healthy I'm pretty confident we will finish 3rd or at worse 4th. Getting past man utd Chelsea is step to far for us right now but I think as this team develops we will pose them real problems in years to come. The problem we have had in our last two seasons is our injury problems, we have had a major injury crisis in both seasons and we are due a bit of luck now when it comes to injuries!

Spurs have a good side but I feel despite having 50 midfielders the actual quality of their midfield is not that good. For me there are no real stand out players in that midfield but they have an impressive strike force and solid defence and a good keeper behind that. As for Newcastle I've been saying they are dark horses for years but they seem to get worse by the year! They need a year for the team to gel first imo but they can do well in the future.

There's no doubt Spurs have bought well this summer with Bent and Bale and possibly this Boateng kid (although the latter I've never even heard of until recently) however are people forgetting the performances Arsenal's kids put in in the Carling Cup last season? Even outplaying Chelsea for much of the season.

I too thought that once Henry went that that would be Arsenal screwed for next season but after the dust has settled on the whole situation I cant get away from the nagging feeling that they'll surprise a fair few people next season.

As for Spurs I think their biggest downfall will be Jol, I just don't think he's got it in him to actually achieve anything. Take 2 years ago all they needed was one win and they'd finish 4th a position that they'd held down for much of the season only for them to bottle it in the final game. Then last season 1-3 up against Chelsea at Chelsea and again they lose their nerve mainly when Jol took off Berbatov.

Arsenal wont win the title next season but I'll be hugely surprised if they dont finish in 4th place at worst. Personally I think the top 4 will finish in the same order as they did last season :)

Big 5 lmao, sorry but only 4 teams have won the premiership History, there will only be 2 teams going for the title, the others will just make a few results matter by beating the 2 teams going for the title.

Point being Westham got cash but not attractive side to join?

Spurs an attractive side to join but not got big bucks?

Newcastle got both?

Duff a fine example the poor lad been out most of the last season though injuries found it hard to get back to back games yet he labelled as a mercenary.

Dyer a merc? He hardly been off our treatment table yet when he back fully fit he in the England squad, He showen good form last year but diped away last stage of the season

Owen? Meh Gods knows what he up to
Ok then if you want to play stupid :p

Point was Newcastle attract mercenaries, greedy players, call it what you want. Fact is the only the real draw up there is the inflated wages you pay. How do you think you got Owen on £100k a week? A croc no-one else is prepared to take a chance on. You say he's world class and a player any team would want when he's fit, that son is exactly the point isn't it? How many millions of pounds has he made sat in the treatment room. Dyer is another, I hope to god the rumours of him joining Spurs are untrue :(

Yes you're right about Duff being a fine example, though not for the reason you meant ;):p

Can I ask how many players have ever left Spurs for Newcastle? erm.... Stevie Carr? :D

What about the other way? Some of our finest buys thankyou in Gazza, Waddle & Ginola. Jenas decided he wanted some London life just recently. Gazza is another player who turned down Man Utd, even they suffer and lose out to London clubs because of the draw of the Capitol.

ok name a top player who sign for spurs ?

Berbatov was quite an unknown. He was also very inconsistent player showing flashes every other game at his former club before going to spurs?

He just improve his game leap and bounds since going to them.
Sorry but that post just shows pure ignorance.

Berbatov was an unkown to you but there were a clamour of top sides after Berbs when he signed for Spurs. Sides like Man Utd no less.

How many teams are after him now? How many people were so **** sure he'd be leaving at the end of the season? We've even got players like Defoe, knowing they're 3rd or 4th choice still wanting to stay at WHL.

Bit harsh, especially as half the team came down with food poisoning. Had they had their full strength team out they would have finished 4th.

As it stands Spurs have a very good team, but they still haven't filled the void Carrick left for them.

I dont understand why Spurs are putting themselves amongst the cream all of a sudden..

fair enough they might of done more than newcastle overall... but its not like they have been kicking about the top the last 10year...

They have only been good since Jol came
What do you mean all of a sudden?

Apart from being among the world's best in the 60's? One of the top pioneering sides in the 80's and early 90's.

First English side to win a European Cup, do the double, held the record for most FA Cup wins (7) for quite a while until the Prem formed and the same teams dominated everything. Hardly "all of a sudden"?

Spurs hit a rough patch at the worst possible time. Where as Newcastle hit a good patch... the beginning of the Premiership. It's taken Spurs a long time to recover but we've clawed our way back up and I honestly believe without bias Spurs should be regarded as one of the biggest clubs in England and a Top 6 side.

Martins certainly has the attributes and potential to be a top player, without a doubt :) Wouldn't actually class him as one yet though.

I agree. I think a lot of people are underestimating Arsenal (Spurs fans especially!) and I think it will work in your favour. Spurs have more pressure and expectation on them whilst Arsenal have a point to prove with Henry leaving.

Jeezus Jazz is talking sense.... almost :p

The dig at use having lots of midfielders is an old and tired one. We actually only have 4 recognized CM's in Zokora, Jenas, Tainio & Huddlestone. Murphy is on his way out. We're thin on the ground for LM's, in the fact that we don't have a single one!!

RM we have Lennon and Malbranque, though Routledge is still there I doubt for more longer. So as you can see we're pretty lean in midfield these days.

LOL :D

Yeah don't like posting things like that, it looks and is childish but how else can you respond to something like "Where did Spurs come from all of a sudden?" as if we'd just done a Wimbledon :)

Chong - it wasn't THE European Cup though was it?

Birmingham City, I believe, were the first English club to win a European trophy -the Fairs Cup in 1960, which became the UEFA cup a decade later.

The FA Cup wins "record" (7) was actually held by Aston Villa until Spurs equalled them in them in 1992.

In addition, I believe Preston North End and Aston Villa had won doubles (FA Cup and Championship) a long time before Spurs!

The Birmingham cup win is missleading. Untill 1968 (had to confirm with Wiki), the fairs cup was a competition between cities who were holding trade fairs and was a friendly competition (basically they didn't have to do anything from a footballing point of view to qualify). Spurs were the first English side to win a European trophy from a proper competition.

Actually, having investigated further, it seems the Blues didn't actually win it after all! It was Leeds who triumphed first for England in 1968!

Will let Spurs off on that one - was only the Mickey Mouse Cup Winners Cup anyway!

*ahem* 1982 ;)

and we're talking about equalling a team that won most of these FA Cups in the 1800's

Are you really talking about the 19th century again?

Are you a Newcastle fan by chance? You guys have fantastic memories.... wonder why? :D

So everything pre-Premiership and Champions League is now Mickey Mouse is it?

i think the top 4 will remain as it - whilst it used to be strikers that made the biggest difference, i think it is the quality of the defense now and also the width that wingers offer.

however, i do think that there are a greater pool of teams that can beat eachother. teams like villa, bolton, pompey, newcastle, west ham, everton and spurs of course all have the ability to beat their counterparts and teams in the top four.

i think the most prominent outcome is that suddenly seemingly big teams can really be facing relegation
