Col: You will need:

A cassette lockring tool,
A chain tool (to remove your old chain unless it's a tool-less chain)
A crank extractor
A BB tool, specific to the BB (there are loads of different types of tool lugs)

Do you actually need a new crankset? Can you not just remove two of the chainrings from your existing one, and shift the desired ring to the middle?

Do you need a new cassette really? And even a new chain? Unless you're severely worn, you won't need any of what you've specced yourself.

As far as im aware he isnt getting a new cassette so no cassete lockring tool and chain whip required. Hes not getting a new crankset hes just getting a new BB that will fit the chain device backplate on. He wont need to split the chain if all hes doing is replacing the crankset.....

johnny is right :p .. have you asked on a forums ?

thanks

Yeh no reply as yet....the usual.

You get the 14 year olds who think they know everything that reply...but the guys that know what they're talking about dont.

Dont wanna put it on descent world as i kinda fell out with that place when i was younger.

mbuk are a bunch of cocky t****s. I got a reply from mtbbrtain tho.. =D

Bloody hell, nowt like chucking yourself in at the deep end, is there???

How easy it is depends on a.) how confident you are that you can do the job properly and b.) whether you have the correct tools for the job.

Bear in mind that to remove the cranks and the bottom bracket, you'll definitely need -

Allen wrenches of the correct size(s)
A crank extractor
The correct tool(s) to remove your current BB and fit your new one
Spanners/sockets
1/2" drive tommy bar or breaker bar and possibly a piece of steel tubing to use as an extension

You might also want to consider a torque wrench just so that you don't under- or over-tighten anything.

Your first job is to decided what you want to end up with. Do you want a single chainring? Double and bash? Triple?

From your other posts, I'd suggest that you're going to need a double and bash set-up which will allow you to retain your front mech. That being the case, do you need anyhting as complex and dedicated as the MRP chainguide? Why not consider something a little more flexible like a Blackspire Dewlie C4 or an E13 DRS setup?

The spacers that you mention are rings which fit betwen the bottom bracket cup and shell to allow you to fine-tune your chain line by moving the BB cartridge left or right as appropriate. They are usually 2,5mm thick and if you are fitting a chain guide to a non-ICGS (WHAATTT???) frame you usually remove one of these rings and replace it with the boomerang plate.

ICGS (International Chain Guide Standard) frames have a set of lugs welded to the bottom bracket shell which allow the chainguide to be mounted directly to the frame. Non-ICGS frames can either be fitted with an adaptor plate to convert them, or as mentioned above the boomerang plate is held in position with the BB cup. The ICGS mount is far more accurate, and also less likely to slip or come out of adjustment if you bang the guide.

I need sleep. If I wasn't tired I'd have been able to keep up. :o

Nah mate i find viagra is good for that sorta thing. Cant discuss that here since no medical talk is allowed.

:o i lose

Hmm never ever ever go on MBUK mate....its full of wee boys.

That reply, however, looks like a more detailed version of mine.

The spacers arent for adjusting the chainline though. Basically they give you 3 spacers......for a bike with a 68mm shell you have one spacer on the nondriveside......and two on the driveside.

For bikes with a 68mm shell and a chain device its one spacer on each side.

For bikes with a 73mm shell its one spacer on the drive side.

For bikes with a 73mm shell and chainguide/etype front mech its no spacers!

I just picked up some 2006 Fox 32 Talas R's for the Heckler for much cheapness. :D Anyone got any advice for removing / fitting a headset race?

YOu but tell me where the **** im gonna mount a front mech on a bighit? So i need an E type front mech......which wont fit if i already have a chain device backplate. :o

Crown race = tiny screwdriver going round slowly and taking your time. Hit it in,push down on screw driver.....move on.

A mate of mine has the triple ring one on his orange Mr O,cant remember the name of it though.
