Big Bike Thread

Well, the legal speed limit for assistance is 15.5mph +/- 10% so shh, don't tell anyone :-)

I built it - it's standard 3 cross, I don't think the angle of the photo helps and also prob looks more as the rear wheel is only two cross.

Ok. It's a bike - this is a bike thread. It's a commuting bike, not a fitness bike - it replaces the car for three days of the week.

Does this make you happier?

long stem is lllloooooonnnnggggg.

added cost and maintenance you mean
I dont see why it's so offensive to you?

I drive to work every day. (and it's only about 5 miles each way)
That involves a huge amount of added cost and maintenance over his bike, so why dont you moan at me for that?

I'm not saying that i would want an electric powered bike, but it seems to have a lot of advantages over a scooter/motorbike if you dont mind the slightly slower speed.

You classifying 18 miles as a long commute... who be trollin' now?! :D

Ah, bar the added cost and maintenance you mean for a measly 18 miles? Looking like a granny I'd add to that on top of that.

What maintanence would that be? Do you think it would be comparable to maintaining a car or motorbike?

As for the granny comment LOL it doesn't look that different from any other commuting bike.

I wasn't comparing it to a motorbike nor car was I ?

No, but the point is that amigafan cant/doesnt want to cycle 9 miles in the morning. His options, other than the bike he chose, would be to use either a car or motorbike.

You cant compare his powered bike to a normal bike, because a normal bike is not an option for him.

Bingo, we have my point. I think it's queer needing an electric bike for an 18 mile commute.

Why? Is it ok to use a car or motorbike for the same distance commute? Oh - and I think you've confused "need" with "want".

I said this right in the beginning

No, what you said was "Amigafan, that's super gay and an embarassment to the thread", which is quite frankly rude and insulting.

Tell me, can you cycle your road bike @ 20mph constant speed into a 20mph headwind and cover 9.2 miles in 33mins and at the other end get off your bike and sit down at your desk and start work straight away with out needing to get changed, take a breather or in desperate need of a drink?

My requirements were:-

1: A form of transport that can get me to work in 35mins.
2: One that I don't need to have a rest at the other end or a need shower after.
3: Costs less than £1 a day in running costs.

Talking about queer - I find it odd that in a bike thread that someone is seemingly unhappy with one less car on the road and one extra bike being used for a commute.

I think I've got it, whilst you've been riding your road bike up a hill you've been overtaken an average fitness person on a electrically assisted bike haven't you? :D

But why are you differentiating between electric bikes and cars/motorbikes?
Why dont we go and invade the motors section of the forum and point out how gay they all are because they dont cycle to work?

also, i was under the impression that the general consensus in this thread is that all roadies are gay anyway? :p

This has nothing to do with cars nor motorbikes, why keep bringing it up?

Getting hot n sweaty... diddums. You mean to say you don't get changed after having been in these extremely harsh elements you describe, being on your electric bike? You just commute in your work clothes?

If so then I stand corrected.

You were comparing his bike to a normal road bike:
Supercow said:
so what exactly does an electric commuter bike do better than a roadbike?
So he pointed out that his choices were that bike or a car, so you should compare it to a car instead.

Because their threads/subforum has nothing to do with me. I personally think that yea.. any distance under 15 miles each way is just that, the country would be a better place if people cycled that commute.

You get that impression, because this thread really is about mountain bikes, hence the roadies ( where this electric really should be) having their own thread.
Granted, it's fun mocking roadies because of the lycra ... but when I used to cycle to work, that was the best part of my day.

Yup, just lock the bike up and sit straight down. No need for a shower, getting changed, grabbing a drink etc. Fresh as a daisy :-)

Then it's my turn for apologies - I was mislead by the thread title of "big bike thread". Maybe someone should rename it to "big tyres bike thread" :p

I think he was just trying to say that attaching an electric motor to a push bike is a bit of an oxymoron :)

Why is it? They've been around for ages. What are motorbikes?

Why not just pedal,

Because 9 miles is longer than I want to pedal and I don't like having to get changed or shower at the other end - wasting maybe another 15mins of the day. Plus it's quite tiring even though I'm quite fit, especially with the headwinds we get in Blackpool.

or drive if you have a car

It takes around 10 mins longer by car and it costs £7 in petrol per commute (2.9 V6 Cosworth) plus associated maintanence and insurance costs. If I commute 3 days out of 5 I can put a limited mileage clause on my insurance. Biking 3 days a week will save me approx £120 a month. Plus, I like being on a bike and the freedom it provides - Blackpool has a dedicated traffic free cycle route the entire length of it's prom. I only need to do 2 miles on road for my 9.2 mile commute.

I think you're overestimating the fitness of the general population.
15 miles might be a painless 45 min ride for you and me, but an average non-cyclist would be looking at near enough 1.5 hours and a week of walking like john wayne :p

In other news, i saw some 29er wheels on ebay at a decent price and bought them in a hurry. Now i'v realised that they are quick release and i need a 15mm through axle, doh! Looks like i'll be rebuilding a wheel pretty soon :(

I've done some pretty good commutes on the mtb I linked earlier, so I can do it and I'm fit enough to do it, I just don't want to for three days in a row with the associated hassle of changing/showering when I get to work (and in those commutes I did have a serious case of wobbly leg syndrome when I got off the bike!)

Buth then you get days like these with stupid wind - 58 mins commute into a 30mph headwind is no fun pedal power only but perfectly doable on an electrically assisted bike.

Oh, and something I have't said is that the commute takes between 35 mins and 50 mins in the car due to the chronic traffic congestion Blackpool has so the eBike is actually quicker than taking the car.

I don't know how people can't "get" the idea of an electric bike but are happy to commute in a car/on a motorbike

Oh, coming back to a non argumentative disussion - I need new bars/stem/grips for my MTB - what's hot in the world MTB's strong xc wise - looking to spend under £100 for the lot.

Yep, i'm the same.
My commute is only 5 miles, i could easily cycle.
I just much prefer to drive in, get here earlier, get home earlier and go out on my bike when i get home.

Have a look on chainreactioncycles for some bars, i got some decent fsa bars last week for £12

edit: looks like the ones i got are sold out now. there are other £12 fsa bars on there, but they have a huge rise (620mm).
