Big Bike Thread

Decided to scrap the idea of a new frame for my Kona, and am playing with the idea of just buying a seperate DH bike. Unfortunately money is limited and I'm looking for ideas, hopefully going to be buying just after Christmas, with a budget of around £500-£600.

I've noticed that I can get a used Specialized Big Hit for this money, but is there anything else that people would recommend?
Ta :)

I loved my old still bighit and I imagine the newer ones would ride similar. Depending on what you get I'd budget for getting it serviced and/or the bearings changed.

Been looking at '07/06 models, was really surprised how cheap they were when I saw them. How much do you reckon we'd be talking for bearings etc?

Still, might be able to get an even newer model after Christmas when chances are lots of people will be getting new rides ;)

I did a great 50 mile ride on my SS today, came home looking like the creature from the black lagoon due to the mud, which was very funny riding down 5th Ave past all the tourists etc :D

I was at Ladybower the other week. Some great trails there. I was going to be going yesterday but my brakes need bled badly and didn't have the time to get it done.

i live about 20mins from ladybower, if anyone fancies a ride there some time then lemme know, not actually ridden there and wouldnt mind checking it out :)

I'm now in to my 2nd week of single speed commuting goodness and all is well except the bike has now got wet due to the wonderful English weather and now the Avid disc brakes make a horrendous noise when I brake.

Any reason why and anything I can do to avoid? The bike is brand new and it's got a free service after 4 - 6 weeks of ownership to tighten and lube everything back up, is it worth mentioning or is it normal?

I'm not really overweight but I also lost 2 kgs last week, that' 4.4 lbs in old money and I've not really altered my diet as such. <3 single speed!

Sorry, not been following this thread as closely as my thread subscriptions on the forums seem to be borked for some reason, what bike did you use before the SS?. How are you finding the SS for the commute compared to your previous bike ( with gears I presume? ).

Oh and well done on the weight loss, excellent stuff!!.

I've got a Specialised Globe San Francisco 1 single speed bike, I used to cycle a couple of years ago on my Dads old Raleigh Apex mountain bike that was too small for me. I then became lazy and started to drive.

In a backwards effort to get a bit fitter and save money on petrol I bought the above bike the other weekend. Loving it :)

Ah right, gotcha now. Nice one.

My current ride is a Pinarello FP1 but I've been keeping an eye out for a second bike to use for my commute during the winter months so I don't wreck the FP1. Been thinking about some sort of hybrid but I'm tempted by a single speed too. Just wondered how you compared the two if you had been previously riding a geared bike, but you haven't....LOL!!

Did my first sportive at the weekend. 100km around the Yorksire Dales and Richmond area including some pretty challenging climbs. The final climb was about 3 miles solid varying between 7 and 15 percent. I was pleased with myself for not pushing when plenty around me were! nearly crashed 3 times on the descent though as the roads were trecherous with high winds and rain.

Ended up 32nd out of 151 starters so pretty pleased with that for a first go. Last Xmas I was a 16 stone lazy fatty, and now weigh 12st 2lbs and done my first race, so overall chugged with myself :)

My Juicy3's are horrible when wet, sounds like a cat is being ran over a 100 times lol, quite funny to roll up to a junction with people at it and slightly pressure the brakes to make them all jump :)

Got myself a choice to make for a winter bike, either:

On-One Inbred 29er or Il Pompino. Both SS and fully rigid. I'm thinking if I get the Pomp, I'll get rid of my racer and use it for commuting and some off road fun. If I get the Inbred, I'll have to keep my racer for commuting, or find some tyres to make it a semi-decent commuter itself, but it'd be more capable off-road.

What are peoples' views on this matter?

You can never have too many bikes. There's a strong chance I might buy a 6th in a few days. :o
2 is the most I really want. There's not enough room for more, and I wouldn't have enough time to maintain them all! It's got to be main mtb and commuter/winter bike. As I fancy getting myself an Intense Tracer in the next 6 months, I'd like something to take out in winter so I don't mess up the bearings too quickly.
