Im after a bike just to get around on, ive made a thread but i might get more repsonse from here.

I was thinking getting one of these maybe the GT, recommendations? budget up to £400

GT Avalanche 3.0 Disc 2010

Specialized Hardrock Disc 2010

Mongoose Tyax Sport 2010

Gary Fisher Advance Disc 2010

Halfords have 20% off all gt bikes at the min for £400 you could get this
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_512517_langId_-1_categoryId_165499
not a bad spec for the dosh.

Any reason you haven't considered a full susser? At £1400 you are into Spesh FSR / Pitch territory, Giant trance, Trek Fuel territory. I noticed you mentioned Cannock Chase but how much do you think you are going to get into mountain biking? Are you going to be riding with friends? A full susser could turn out to open more options for you later.

Don't get me wrong, I started on a hardtail, even bought a few others since :) and ride them everywhere but my full susser gets used much more.

To answer your question, I would be looking at 4 things in this priority order: frame, suspension, wheels, brakes. Everything else can/will be upgraded over time at less cost.

I did consider a full sus but whilst I will be riding up at Cannock with it, it won't always be used on trails. I think if I get seriously into off road riding I will move up to a full suspension. Lack of fitness, a back problem and lack of talent says I should stay away from the hard core stuff at the moment :D

Halfords will just send it to you in a box if ordered online, it won't be assembled in anyway. You can then take it to your local store and have it assembled free.

Are bikes easy to assemble? never have done before, would it be better to get it done properly?

Easy to assemble yes. Easy to assemble properly, yes, if you know what you're doing. I know a little but not enough yet to confidently build a bike from scratch and have it working as intended. Best best is to take it to Halfords and let them do it. If you say have an accident because it wasn't built properly you have no recourse if you build it yourself. . Problem is, some Halfords stores have poorly trained staff. Some though are very good.

Did you go down the DH track? Is the rode gap still there?

No I didn't. It was either Cwmcarn DH or Brechfa XC. Didn't know there was any DH at Brechfa, but apparently there is XC at Cwmcarn as well. So much to ride in the UK.

So far this year has been:

Marin Trail
Penmachno
Coed Llandegla
MBR
Dragons Back
The Wall
Whites Level
*something else at Afan
Mynydd Du Forest
Brechfa blue/green
Glentress part black
Glentress red
Kerloch
Morray Monster Trails (2 x Black and 1 x blue)
Fort Bill red
Whinlatter
Ladybower
Bedgebury (inc 12hr night ride)
Epping Forest
Chicksands

Pitfichie next week. :)

Omg was probably going to order that today but the 20% deal has ended, now i'm going to have to settle for an inferior bike, typical

Does anyone have any other suggestions ?

edit: probably going for this http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_512541_langId_-1_categoryId_165499 now, anything else better for the price before i click? :)
