There are a few different standards unfortunately.

Octalink is for the cheaper Shimano Cranks I think. Both SLX and the RaceFace use Hollowtech II BBs.

This is a good video to give you the idea of Hollowtech, basically, the cranks aren't attached to the BB, they just pass through it..

It looks more purple than pink in decent light I'd say. It's quite cool to be honest,I did **** him off for most of the day though. Don't know why purple is such an in colour justnow on BMXs.

cos its retro, innit.

anyway, geoff just copied me on the whole purple thing :D

(not me riding, my bike though)

I think you should be able to use other BBs, Raceface say the X-Type is interchangable with at least the Shimano stuff, I was under the impression anything Hollowtech II would work, but I'm sure someone else will confirm or deny that..

I've had the bike about 4 months now, and so far so good, although i've haven't done that much mileage on it. There was a thread on singletrackworld a few days ago with people claiming to have killed them in 3 months though :o

I killed an X Type BB in 3 months. I also killed an XT M770 BB in less than 9 months (IIRC).

Managed to get them both replaced under warranty through CRC and my LBS respectively. :)

I'm really fancying a cyclocross bike with discs (deffo front, possibly Vbrake at rear) and an alfine hub for commuting to my placement next year.. Any suggestions for a cheap one which would let me use discs?

6th, i what situation would a monster cross bike be more desirable than an MTB or regular 'cross bike?
They're generally similar geo to touring road bikes, but can take up to 2" tyres. Monster cross generally just refers to a bike with fat tyres and drop bars. The advantage over a mountain bike is the longer headtube for use with the drop bars. I like the ability to add racks and panniers too, I've got a desire to do some monster long distance rides and can't do that on my carbon roadie. There's a 200 and 300+ mile race I'm also thinking of doing next year where the terrain is mostly dirt and gravel roads.

^^Attempted justification for a new bike purchase :D

Hey guys if i was to put a bash ring on my crankset, what size would i need if my middle ring is 32t, do i need to go slightly bigger than 32 or will a 32 be fine...i hardly ever use my top ring at all and im sick of my trousers getting ripped and caught.

I don't think I've ever seen a bash guard smaller than 32, so pretty much any model you want will work.

How about this for a touring bike

Cheers for the link andi, much appreciated. I didn't know they had this type of stuff on YouTube, very handy!

^^ I've ordered one of those, waiting for it to be delivered..

I went for 36t, so if I want to in the future I could fit a bigger middle ring.

E-Thirteen Supercharger comes with bolts, thats £35 unless you pick one on offer though, and its heavier.

Ground clearence isnt really an issue as the 42t big ring will be going, i never seem to have much trouble with it anyway, its just purley to stop my trousers getting caught as ive only used the big ring 2 times since fitting my new crankset.
