i just sorted mine out, by running the wheels round with the brake half applied, cleared the rust on the discs, now to sort the rest of mine lol, i think rust on the outside edge where the pads dont contact is fine and shouldnt cause a problem, see it on car discs all the time.

The rust is actually on the edge of the disc, as in the bit that's 2mm wide, not the actual braking surface. It doesn't seem to be affecting the braking as such, but it looks untidy. Maybe some wet/dry paper of something similar?

Can anyone recommend some tyres for the snow? Using the MTB for work and my road orientated tyres just arent cutting it. First half mile from my house is compact snow and powedered about 9 inches thick. Its going to be wih us for a few weeks so worth the investment I think.

You need something like one of these, nice 4" wide tyres:

Deep powdered snow nothing will work, compacted snow you need a wide tread for traction. Ice means you need studded tyres.

Some disc brake cleaner, or IPA should clean it off, it'll only be surface rust.

Maybe some nokian extremes? You may have to get them from Germany (www.bike24.com or www.bike-components.de) I got some schwalbe marathon winters but they are mainly for ice / compacted snow and don't do well on thick snow - in London though most roads are salted and other roads aren't that bad as the snow gets compacted and turned into slush. Check out peter white's website as he has quite a good section regarding studded tyres.

some quick advice please (thought id post in here rather than create a thread)
i've decided as a get fit excercise to buy my first MTB with a mind to doing some XC work
now i ordered up a Felt Q220 2009 model from evans as i thought the spec looked ok for a beginner etc but it now turns out that it isnt in yet but may be this week?
i have an option to go for the Specialized Hard Rock 2010 Disc instead but im not too clued up on the specs and whether or not it will suit me better?

any advice as im a total noob when it comes to this although i understand some basics but would rather get some proper advice :)

heres the comparison page on evans http://www.evanscycles.com/products-comparison?products=ec019400|ec017059

Personally I'd go for the Hardrock and if you've got the extra £45 to hand, I'd get the Hardrock Sport:

Just recommended that very bike to one of my friends after going into Evans with him, checking out other bikes around the same money (Including the Felt and the base Hardrock) and also chatting with the guys in store.

Out on a whim today, work was slow so decided to get out in the snow.
Stiffee all sorted now! no thanks to CRC, still havnt got back to me regarding the 2nd hanger. still got the first one which I bent back in the vice. Still, rides amazing.

And a nice scenic one through the local woods (5 miles away from home)
Riding to them was alittle sketchy. Fell off 3 times. but was out in it for 2 hours. All good stuff!

Ok strange question coming up, Got Avid Juicy3's with G2 rotors and when they are wet, like when riding in the snow or rain, they make a noise i can only describe as a cat being strangled while being ran over by a bus..anything i can do to stop this - different pads or something?
