Hey guys, this is just a general question, what would it take to strip a frames paint and then repaint it, the paint on my commencal is well, in dire shape..its got chips, scratches and general wear on it and i fancy making it look nice again (although the decals will be gone) frame is a combi disc 08.

nitromors + some wet/dry to strip the paint off and get it ready for painting. Best to get it painted properly tho.

Lot of nice bikes on this thread! Currently trying to source myself one, almost got an early Kona stinky for £270 off Eblag. Finding it hard to find something good for my budget (£350). Got any recommendations where to look? Am already scouring Bikeradar/Pink Bike/Eblag.

Cheers

Alex

Would like sealed bearings rather than loose for the XC, but able to take the dirt jumping through the summer.

My LBS is offering the Ritchey WCS for £30, wondering if that is up to the job or not.

Good headset for XC- I've got one that's been on and off a few frames. the sealed bearings are pretty good. Had a big crash and one result was the lower bearing unit 'broke' open- no damage, it just means I can re-grease it now!

WCS headset for £26 delivered here http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/111104.html

So, picked up my new ride from Leisure Lakes today, they've shifted all the bits from my old frame to my new one (pics of Be-One frame earlier in this thread but will get full bike shots up tomorrow - looks ace), however the brakes (Hope Mono-Mini 185/165) have lost all bite.

I asked them to check the pads while they were doing the work and they said they were fine, and they don't need bleeding either as the feel at the lever is fine, they just don't do an awful lot of stopping (I'm 15 stone but all the same, they used to upend the bike with me on it using one finger).

So, what to do? Shall I clean the discs using some proper stuff? If so, what stuff and what do I apply it with?

A few questions if I may. Although a bit premature.

How do I increase the travel on my Revelations 2010 Race, from 140mm to 150mm. Are there any guides on the net. Ive googled but nothing :( (I know somthing about spacers...)

Also, was tyres would be a good shout for Morzine, A bit early to plan as im not going untill July. Downhill 2.3's?

Are they new pads and/or rotors?
They might need to bed in first if so. (wetting them with water will help to bed them in faster)

If not try cleaning them with brake cleaner and if that does not help you'll need new pads (and maybe rotors if they are badly worn)

Because the calipers have been removed and then repositioned on a new frame (in relation to the rotor), then the orientation/centering of the pad to the rotor will now have changed and they will need to rebed, even though they're used pads. Get some speed up and give them some hard braking and they should bed back in quick enough.

I am currently looking for a hybrid city bike, one that I can carefully put in the back of my car or on the train, go to london, and then ride around all day and come home. Im just not fit enough to walk. Not even sure I need gears ? Problem is im 6ft 8 and weigh around 20 stone.

First thing to do is check when your train company allows bikes on trains. SWT pretty much only allow folding bikes on my route during the week.

Your size and weight shouldn't be too much of an issues and it would be a great way to loose weight, if that is what you are after. I don't actually know much about weight limits for bikes, but if Laurence Dellaligo (sp?) can do a charity ride on a road bike then you shouldn't find it too difficult.

If you aren't fit enough to walk, I'd highly recommend gears. I'm fit, but I still need gears when riding around London.

Not sure if they do folding bikes that would suit your size, however if they did that is what I would look for. Otherwise any hybrid (probably be a good idea to get disc brakes with your weight) would do the job. I have a specialized globe sport disc which I have modified, but at stock it was pretty good. Their new line is out for 2010 which has an equivalent bike I think.

Because the calipers have been removed and then repositioned on a new frame...
The forks & front wheel are the same though, just the frame that was changed so this can't be the case, and it's the front brake that's lost bite.

Are they new pads and/or rotors?
Same pads & rotors, I asked the shop to check them as part of the service and they said they had plenty of life left in them.

I expect the caliper will still have been removed during the switch over of parts, so would say it's normal as mentioned before. Try bedding them in a bit and if that doesnt work then worry about it.
