On the subject of single speed, what are the benefits? From the top of my head I can imagine that: less things to break, lighter, improved fitness. I can see the appeal of not having to bother with gears and just cranking through anything, but I bet you've got to be fit!

Too many hills where I live so can't see me getting one soon :p

low cost, makes you strong or half kills you. Very easy to maintain also is possible to make cheaper/older bikes lighter. Been riding ss for a while and its a lot of fun when you are fit enough.

You can use pretty much any ratio you want, provided you can get hold of the cogs. There is quite a lot of variation available. SS gears tend to have bigger teeth since the last thing you want is for the chain to move off the cog.

Yeh, if your only going to be using it on one bike, or dont mind swapping it over, the computers with the magnet in the spokes can be got super cheap.
I use a gps device because i frequently swap between bikes (and can also use it on my snowboard).

I got a brand new spoke magnet one on ebay for 99p for a uni project.
