I know it's £400 more on top, but the Cannondale Six Carbon 105 is a much, much better bike. I'm looking at one as my next.

Tha certainly looks nice :) I shall try and save some more. I guess by the time summer comes around I may be able to afford it :)

Combine your love of computing with your love of mountain biking and you get...

I'm definitely considering the Maelstrom when I (God knows when) get enough money for a DH/FR machine..

A few people have had problems with the idler pulley causing chain suck though, they've come out with a 2nd revision (a smooth rubber roller like on some chain guides instead of a cog) which is apparently better.

quick ?
ive just bought some shimano deore combined lever shifters on a spur of the moment thing (got them 2nd hand for a steal)
however in my haste i forgot to research whether or not they will work on my current 7spd setup
if i were to upgrade from 7 to 9 do i need to change the wheel as well?
im aware that i will need to change the rear mech and cassette but when im looking at wheels (which i was going to buy a spare set anyways) i dont see the hub sizes mentioned  surely the hub sizes would determine whether or not its for a 7 spd cassette or 8/9

ah cheers m8, just measured mine and it appears to be 135mm, so think that'll take a 9 spd cassette ok
guess that means i'll need a rear mech and new chain and that should be me over to 9spd

Def need a new chain.
I think any rear mech will work with any number of gears because it has an unlimited range of positions and it's position is determined by the shifter on your bar. Best to check with somebody who knows this for sure tho as i could be wrong.

It will work but it won't be pretty. You could use 8 cogs from a 9 speed cassette and a 9 speed chain. The last gear on the shifter wouldn't work....obviously. The rings on the crankset might need replacing also as they would be worn unevenly with the rest of the transmission. 135mm will be the axle length. I don't think the freehub body will take a 9 speed hub. Replacing the freehub might require a wheel re-dish.

If it was me I would replace everything or leave it as is.

If your planning on getting new wheels anyway I think this would be easier than a hub conversion, most rear wheels are now 9spd as standard meaning they can take a 7 or 8 speed cassette in necessary using a spacer.

Oh, i always thought that 7/8/9 speed freehubs were the same size.
Sorry Torch, it appears i have no idea what i'm talking about :p

npbs m8 :)
