Thanks IC. Just looking now, i have never looked into building a bike before - i have VERY little exp / knowledge of this. I just know how to chuck it up and down hills :D

I need a service like merlin that will build me one :D

Andy

I reckon your going to be looking at £1200 for a descent build and obviously you can shop around for parts to get the best prices. Then just drop all of parts off at your LBS get them to put it together, one of my locals will do a custom build purchased elsewhere for £75.

What's a good quality bike in your eyes then Ichabod ?

If I was putting a hardtail together I would look at some of these Transition TransAM, Cotic BFe, Evil Sovereign, Morewood Kwela, Pipedream Sirius, Whyte 19 631 STEEL. Just to name a few :p

Booo....that was an answer i didnt want 6th - but thanks ;)

I really want more than 100mm travel on the front but have spent nearly 1k already
in the last 3 months.

So do i buy a long travel hardtail or would i regret that, or should a buy a budget full sus.

Andy

I wouldn't worry about running a 120mm fork. Depending on the fork you have/want the head angle might not change much at all. Dial in some extra sag and you could also compensate for the change of axle height/head angle.

Thanks IC, ill have a look and see if i can sort of spec one over the weekend.

To be fair im sure my LBS will do this as they seem really friendly / helpful.

Weeeeeee.....i was looking at going to the 140mm fox from a 100mm RS

Cheers

Andy

Currently weighing up this in my head, any thoughts?

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=48031

vs

Second-hand santa cruz superlight/blur for around the same price.

Background - currently in Whistler, coming back to UK in 2 weeks so can buy over here and transport back for $60, or buy in the uk. Mainly ride xc/all-mountain outside of the bike park here. Rode last season entirely on a hard tail, sold it before winter. Never ridden a dual suspension bike in my life....

ok, think I have decided to stick with a hardtail......have been looking at longer travel hardtails and am liking the look of Saracen Zens, has anyone played with one of these?

I have ridden all 3 in some form or another. The Iron Horse got poor reviews here. I forget what they said but I liked the Iron Horse. The DW link is similar in a way to VPP. I don't think it would be fair to compare a Superlight to a Blur, very different bikes. VPP blows single pivot away when it comes to technical climbing.

A bonus of Single pivot is ease of maintenance. Only 2 bearings to replace.

If you are talking about the Classic Blur then rear tyre clearance is poor. Not great for UK mudfests. This was addressed in later models.

If you can get a later model Blur XC Alu for cheap...I would go for that without a doubt.

LOL IC, i know they used to be a "cheap" make when i was a kid, but when your paying £1k you expect something decent :|

Im starting to get annoyed looking now so im doing nothing, gonna try and kill my current beast first.

I have a weird "knocking" when i gently pull the front brake, have checked stem, star nut and wheel and all seem tight.

Think ill take a run into LBS tommorrow (but will leave my wallet at home lol)

Used to be? They have got better over the years and tried hard to get rid of that reputation...but failed...constantly. The Saracen Ariel 1 look good though, but even if it was a mountainbiking revelation I wouldn't buy it because of the complete lack of customer service.

A friend just bought a Boardman bike from Halfords. He had to go to the next town over to test it as his local branch wouldn't let him test ride the one in store...WTF?

/rant

New Saracens are supposed to be good. I'd love an Ariel, they look awesome.

If I wanted a long travel hardtail (which part of me does..) I'd be looking at Ragley.

Cocked up my ride massively today, ended up riding at ladybower for a bit instead.

I have never, ever, in my life seen so many greenflies. I was absolutely crawling with them, kept having to stop and shake out my jersey

Thanks, the ironhorse seems to get favorable reviews on mtbr.

Currently lusting after this - http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/bik/1750035790.html - a bit beyond my budget though :D

Ticks every box aside from the one specifying it musn't look like absolute gash?
 The Crush is a great looking bike!

IceAx - go for it mate, I'd be straight in there if I were looking for a new hardtail. Nothing in the spec you'd need to change and it's made right here in the UK.

That's an annoying issue with Halfords stores, but having ridden the FS Comp and ridden with one many times, I can say it's astonishing value for money, probably the best out there at the moment.

Been meaning to post a picture of my bike for ages. :) It's a Btwin Sport 1 (as made by Decathlon), it's basic but a nice bike to ride. I just upgraded the wheels to Fulcrum Racing 7s and put a new Campy Mirage cassette and chain on. It shifts really smoothly for a cheaper groupset, especially since putting a new chain on, I'm very impressed by it.
