I have a felt hard tail, SlX gears, XT M770 chainset, Juicy 7 breaks, Revelation 426 forks, hope pro 2 on 719 rims / Dt swiss 5.1.

Apparently the carbon remedy has Aluminium plate that runs down the down tube to protect it from rocks.

It's not the breaking that concerns me at all - I believe the carbon is supposed to be stronger?

My concern would be the chips. Do carbon bikes chip, or is my mistrust completely unsubstantiated?

so sad to read something like that

have been there when a mate broke his neck after landing straight onto head. was only young at the time but the 5 minutes before he started moving where probably scariest moments of my life

a few pro bmxers have had there lifes ruined by such accidents in the last few years too. look up stephen murray. or maybe dont because its so sad to read about.

hes gone from world champion to being paralysed from the neck down :( . to make things worse his wife did a runner and left him with the kids and because hes been in america for to many years he cant come home to use the NHS and his health insurance money quickly ran out out over there :(

As above, it's not really the breaking im worried about (even though failures are generally catastrophic rather than gradual) its the trail damage (chips, scratches) and the amount of care they require in comparison to their counterparts. As mentioned by Supercow, as far as I'm aware they're generally overbuilt these days, so go beyond the required tolerances, but having used CF closely in other sports, I'm very unsure of it in such an exposed application.
 
My bike has 0 chips. Helicopter tape runs on the downtube to protect the under surface and that's it.
There are a few scratches to the gloss finish from riding through under growth but that’s expected.

My FSR XC has loads of chips and has been used much less.

Won't be a hard find but I'd be inclined to get a BETD one if you find out which one you need. They are fully machined and seem to be quite a bit stronger than the usual stock ones. I got 7 when i bought my frame,guy before me must have ate them for breakfast.

My friend broke his neck couple of months ago. Cant move anything from waist down. Only 16 years old too.. Really brought it home and went out and bought a neck brace straight away. Also Ben Baker was very lucky recently

I've recently picked up the Moto GPX Club model, cost just over 200 quid. Haven't had a chance to try it yet though.
 
Quick question - Cleaning.

I've had my Rockhopper Expert a couple of weeks now and have yet to give it a clean. It's only been out on a couple of runs, but it's looking a bit mucky, and obviously I want to look after it and make sure I don't cause harm to the gears etc.

Muck off any good, followed by some lube of some kind?

Yes, and yes

quick tip : dont spray Muc off washer on your bike... tip some into a washing bucket and fill up with water and wash with a sponge, you tend to waste a lot just spraying it on
