What tyres would you guys recommend as a compromise between on road/tarmac for a commute and off road but only for trails and canal paths etc not heavy duty off roading?.

Right, quick question for any big-headed people out there- where do you buy your helmets from? Normal ones don't come close to fitting my head.

I got a tape measure, go on CRC and bought one.

My head is on the large size and it fit, i got a Giro Animas.

I've just bought some Panaracer Mach SS for the same stuff, though they're more a XC Race tyre than a road semi slick, so they're more off road biased. Dirt cheap though, £10 each from JE James. Only got my rear wheel fixed today, so just put the tyre on and haven't had time to give them a proper test yet, but after a quick up the road and back they're much quieter and faster rolling than an mud tyre.

Those look just the job.

Thanks for the link. Have ordered stuff from JE James previously and found them to be very good.

What if I wanted to err on even more slanted to road/tarmac than those?. Any recommendations?. What are these Schwalbe "Big Apple" tyres I see getting mentioned like?. I have Schwalbe Stelvios on my road bike and find them to be excellent.

It's worth the trip if you like natural trails. Some epic big country riding all over. If you do venture further than Dundee let me know. :)

Edit: New pedals on:

Supercow and Ichabod crane made me buy them![/QUOTE]

Looks sweet, I think I'll be picking up a pair of these too when I get my DH rig in next couple of weeks :)

No way those pedals hold up to FR.
Not real FR anyways, dont think any one of us in this thread does actual FR ;)

Well no, FR was a little strong a word. But it is writtern on my Stiffee :D
I will be doing some downhilling in Morzine and will be putting flats on!

edit - on reflection, I ride nothing like that video! XC/AM then.

Just back from a week cycling in Majorca.
Had a brilliant time, clocked up 584 miles in 8 days.
There are some amazing roads over there:

Cant wait to get back on my poor neglected mtb now. (but considering the state of my legs atm, that may be some time :p )
