Made me want my big bike back on the road :(

WTB: Money

I went to check out the downhill track at Storthes hall woods in Huddersfield today.

It's pretty short from top to bottom, a run maybe takes 40secs - 1 min (or longer if you're me!) and there's loads of jumps, drops and berms.

There's a few drops and jumps that are way above my ability level but I thought I'd take a few piccies anyway!

Pretty big gap with my bike for comparison:

A really fast berm:

Luckily most of these features have chicken runs around :p I think it's really cool that it's just been built by locals and there's hardly any litter around either, it seems the track is pretty well looked after.

Actually, I forgot to ask - Do any of you roadies use "wing" shaped bars?. If so, how do you find the flat topped surface. More comfortable than standard profile/oversized bars?.

I have to admit, I'm rarely on the drops, I prefer riding on the hoods or the top part of the bars so I'm interested to hear if the bars you can buy with the "wing" shape are more comfortable or afford you any other advantages/benefits ( other than having somewhere to route yer cables ) ?.

That, and there are some nice carbon ones on the Bay just now that my Paypal account is calling me to buy..........:p

That looks like allot of fun. Thanks for posting the pics :)

Really looking forward to having a blast on my first DH run next month

Not sure what you mean by 'wing' shaped. Got a picture or a link?

I think he means the drop bars you get with the aero shaped top section. (like these).
I'v never used them myself but they dont look very comfortable. Also, if you say that you have your hands on that part most of the time, then you're probably negating any aero advantage that they give you anyway.

edit: oops, beaten :(
edit2: but your picture of the non-carbon one is actually made of carbon - so i win :p

How do you get here? I might head over next week from Sheffield and check it out

Head for the woodman inn: http://www.woodman-inn.co.uk/

With the Woodman on your right, go over the small bridge after it and immediately right.

Head on up the road, after passing some houses the road will narrow, then open up again to an area where you can park: http://tiny.cc/g0rgf

Once you get there (!) head through the style (next to the blue bin :p) and head down the wall, keep going and eventually you'll start to see the top half of the track (a few doubles). If you google Storthes Hall downhill you'll find a few threads around and about with different descriptions of how to get there.

So, you are really going to ride
* DH for the first time
* on a DH bike for the first time
* Down the WC track in Fort Bill

?

You sir have some serious testicular fortitude or the severe lack of sense, possibly a combination of the two :D

I really recommend you - at the very least - go ride on your mates bike down the local singletrack... just to get used to how quickly a DH bike picks up speed.
We'd hate to se you post pictures of horrible injuries here in this thread mate.
