I sacrafice the uphill ability for the smile factor on the way down.

I pedalled up a steep hill in 32t - 11T on the kona stinky posted above. Was hard work but i would rather be able to go downhill fast.

Lockout helps ;)

The shock and fork on the Enduro have low speed compression settings which pretty much completely remove pedal bob.

I would really like to try out an Epic or Enduro, but there is no way I'll get that chance around here.

i.e. I rode a santa cruz heckler the other day, lovely bike and the suspension on it was fantastic, barely any bobbing from pedals at all. Can't remember what shock it had on it though.....

My Heckler has a DHX 5.0 and has NO BOB what so ever, the platform damping is well suited to the Single Pivot Design. My old float RL wasn't that bad for bob either. The Nomad only bob's if you get out of the saddle (Float R). Your energy has to go somewhere so suspension bob isn't that big an issue IMO.
 
I've got Nobby Nics 2.1s on my hardtail and I like them.

Conti Slash 2.3s on my full susser. Conti claim they are a winter / mud tyre but I would rate them as a good all rounder.

Nokian...something...they were blue.

VERY grippy but VERY fast wearing.

Tubes: Anything light weight does me as I am a light rider.

Maxxis swampthing
Maxxis High Roller

Check to see what the widest tyre your rim can take or they may suffer from sideways walk. The more square the profile the more grip.
 
I used to ride panaracer fire Xc 2.1 and they where pretty grippy,hit tarmac + some wet and they were lethal though. Had me sliding towards railings on my arse.

I would go for something like a single ply high roller 2.35(its not really that wide,i would say a 2.35 maxxis is a 2.1" tioga for instance) but get a harder compoint like 60a but im not sure if you only get the choice of compound on the dual ply ones.

Bonty Jones ACR are pretty good, as are Schwalbe Black Sharks, as for muddy DH, Wet Scream 3's are probably the best out there.
 
my friend has got back into dirt jumping recently and has just rebuilt/refurbed his jumps in his field.. I have the genesis core 1.0 and just wondering if its ok to do dirt jumping with it or will stuff break? thanks
 
You can dirt jump on most mountain bikes, unless there are huge drops you'll be ok. At the BMX dirt track near me, most people ride MTBs (not specific DJ bikes) of some description.
 
Are you big and/or fat? Are you going to hit anything very hard? Rims are hard to bend in on themselves, and unless you crash badly (which you could do during any type of ride) they'll be fine.

thats the bike, are you sure it will be strudy enough? how easily do rims bend? thats what I'm worried about most..

well kinda depends on how big the jumps are n how smooth you are :) should be fine for some light dirt jumpin i would have thought

rims are more likely to fold rather than ovalise, if he rides hard n they arent upto the job they will die.

sweet jesus of nazarath wtf did you do to it? a guy on another forums says I should get a cheap jump bike if I was to start regularly.. how cheap can I get one?
