I rode up a mountain with more than a metre of snow at the edge of the road an a pillion on the back.

I'll never be doing that again!

Edit: It looks like that was back when I used to record my rides:

I’d take that over a non treated path and road :p

I’m not going to work, I need to be somewhere at 7am and it’s going to take me just under 2 hours.

I need to use my bike as that’s the reason I’m making the journey. :)
You need an SV, not sure if you'll be able to handle all that mighty torque tho... :D

What’s the worst conditions you guys have ridden in? According to the weather online it’s going to be -5 here tomorrow morning.

As I live at the top of a hill, we don’t get any sun until around 12-1pm so the path is always iced up.

I really need a cheap bike as the thought of sliding my bike down the path and creating an expensive bill is not how i want to start my week :p

Pyrenees three years ago, in May. End of a long day's ride from Cognac and we had one high pass to cross. The signs at the bottom were all clear, but there was heavy fog and it was extremely cold. We slowly ascended, dodging a few snow slips on the way from when it had been warmer, and literally crawled the last 200 metres of height as the meltwater was freezing. Made it to the top, feeling spectacular as we hadn't fallen off. Visibility was around 10 metres, but we took photos and video and then headed around the corner for the descent only to discover that the descending pass was in fact closed. We had to back track down a road that was icing by the minute, and an 18 km journey turned into 100 km+.

Still, I fondly look back on that day. I certainly learned a lot - the pass was only 1,800 metres or so but still enough to cause a lot of problems at that time of year. My visor fogged up, then my glasses fogged up, and the my eyeballs seemed to fog up. I've never been so happy to descend to a crappy deserted ski resort!

Similar story to the trip I posted above. The pass was closed due to snow and I have footage of skiers crossing the road in front of me near the peak.

Riding in Ireland with a pillion, up into mountains (bad advice of a short cut) very wet and cold, one track lane, occasional on coming traffic almost pushing me down a pretty sheer drop. It was only 12 miles but I think it took about an hour and was honestly just glad to survive it.

I forgot to mention the other night - insuring the little CB400 I came across the sometimes madness of insurance companies.

£61 to insure the bike fully comprehensive, with a value of £500 and adding it to my existing policy. Helpfully the existing policy covers my gear for any bike.

The lowest compulsory excess? £400. The lowest voluntary excess? £250. Total: £650. For a £500 bike. I joked with the sales drone, asking if I would need to pay the £150 difference if I wrote it off. Her response was "I'll just check for you" !

I know that there's a risk of me stacking it into a £100,000 car, but it just seems a bit silly sometimes.

I was running some renewal quotes the other day and lowering my bikes value by £500 actually increased the quote

I was paying about £90 fully comp on mine with a £250 excess, value of £1500 - that was on a stand alone policy though.

The worst part is that they have a £50 admin charge to cancel it off the policy, so when it gets sold in April it will have cost me even more! Hey ho - pretty confident I'll get more than £500 once it has had a bit more TLC so everything will balance out. I've just upgraded the nav on the XR to a Navigator 6 at a cost of £550, so hopefully the sale of the CB400 will yield enough profit to pay some of that back.

What should I do, I want to downgrade my bike to something not so expensive.

I don’t like using my bike for work at the moment, it’s definitely overkill for commuting.

If I were to trade it in, should I take off my aftermarket parts?

The akra decat headers can stay on as there’s zero chance of me going through all the work needed to put the stock exhaust back on but I may as well take the rizoma levers off and sell them separately.

I will leave the bike as it is if I decide to sell privately.

Im leaning towards a Honda CB1000r, there’s a 2011 one in my local Honda dealer and it’s up for £4199.

If I can push for £7500 for mine that’ll leave me with £3000+ which I can pocket.

Plus I can still have a lot of fun on one of those and I was tempted to try one before I got the S1000r.

I’m not sure how much different the Honda will be for commuting, granted it’s not as extreme but it’s the same style of bike.

I’d be looking at something with torque. A bit random but what about the Honda 700 parallel twin? They’re cheap brand new and also come with an auto box which would be great for commuting plus great mpgs.

Assuming you mean the NC750 it gets mixed reviews, the ease of use and practicality is great but the engine is pretty underpowered for a 750. Apparently this is because Honda are taking it easy with strain on their new DCT 'box.

I know someone who has one as a commuter and he swears by it (proper biker too, has a KTM SDR for weekends and a Goldwing for touring).

Calling all entrants to the @Clov!s 'when will he next change his bike' sweepstake!

I personally love the number of times you change your bikes. Granted, it is probably fairly expensive, but you're getting to ride and own more bikes than the majority of people on this forum!
