Mod 1 passed. Chuffed of course but had to dial down my reactions as the guy I trained with, who was much more natural at riding than I was did fail so was kicking himself.

I had 2 minors as forgot my life savers till I got to the u turn but did 57 for the emergency stop and 52 for avoidance. Avoidance did poop myself as was concentrating on the speedo and was slow to swerve but made it fine.

Now a “long” wait till the 27th for my mod 2. Might give my left hand time to recover from the clutch work which is really giving me a dead hand for some reason.
Wait they want you to do life savers on the off road mod 1 now?

The figure of 8 must be a right bugger in that case?

Adjust the clutch lever out so you'renot having to pull it in so far, don't be afraid to just cause its not your bike. Also school bikes get dropped a lot check its in the right position on the bar (the locating nub can be broken or worn off so it's too high too low etc as it's turned on the bar) hold the bar less like a tennis racket and more like an ice cream cone helps too, also this forces your elbow to bend and keeps you nice and loose.

You need to do them as you set off for each exercise and a 2nd one after setting off but before doing the u turn. So for the first section you check before pulling away for the slalom but as you don’t stop for figure of 8 you don’t need to again.

Good shout, I’ll check the bikes adjustments when next out to see if I can bring it closer. I’ll also mention to the instructor in case he’s seeing something odd in the way I’m using it.

So yamaha has said they won't be making a euro5+ compliant r1 or r6.

I wonder if this indicate the start of a shift to electric?
I think it’s a lot to do with people just not buying full fat sports bikes anymore (that’s what I was told by a Yamaha dealer).
I sold my ZX10R because it’s complete overkill for the roads and there’s zero way I could use all the power without a long ban.
Riders seem to be shifting towards super nakeds now as they’re still fast, handle well and don’t cripple you every time you get on them.

True i think yami sold only 300ish r1s last year in the uk.

Yeah super nakeds are the new adventure bikes.

Ahh ok I never counted the checking the area around you when setting off as a life saver i always thing of it as the last minuteshoulder check, yeah not looking then was a minor for me too and still something I do habitually 15 years later.

Don't bring it closer take it further out.

Close in you have to close your hand a lot take the clutch out as far as you can and then low speed work is just a very gentle squeeze you can do with hardly any pressure.
You want the bite point as far out as you can for your finger length so it's the minimum effort to use. What's the bike your on btw? Some do have heavy clutches, especially if a cable instead of hydraulic.

I am spoiled by slipper assist clutches latley though school bikes can be a bit crap. But yeah play with it find what works for you. For me i tend to have the clutch far out brake further in.
I like a shorty/dogleg brake and a long straight clutch too because I commute and filter a lot

Ah ok that makes sense. It’s a triumph trident 660 which I am quite enjoying.

I’ll probably not play too much as next session is the mod2 so don’t want to unsettle how I’m now use to the bike but will look at this when I get my own. Or maybe for the ride back after the test

Ah ok so cable it will be a bit heavy.
Yeah just have a play with the adjuster on the lever and remember to check it when you start other students may have changed it.

Finally made up my mind and bought a low mileage 2023 Ktm Duke 790 with a load of remaining warranty.

Was eyeing up Gsxr600s but in the end thought Abs , traction control and the other toys would be better for a returning rider.

Probably wont arrive until next week or so, but apparently it might snow this weekend so not the end of the world.

Painfully had to cancel the Duke 790 purchase when I realised the bars at 82cm wouldnt fit where I needed it to go. I'd measured previously and not allowed a bit of give and so on.

So back to sports bikes at 70 ish cm and back to where I started looking a few months back.

Heres my not Ktm, a 92 Vfr400 Nc30 import , great shape , low mileage at 10k miles, needs a bit of a cosmetic tidy up , but all original panels etc.

Will be living in the house for a month or so whilst I sort a few things out. Came yesterday and had a brief hour with it, was great )

My Biketrac tracker has killed my bike battery, had read about this being a problem with them and despite having the bike hooked up to the official battery maintainer for the marque it has still killed the battery. Great! I'm not renewing my Biketrac subscription.

Used to lust afer them in my better days, can't beat a single sided swingarm imo (i think i'm right in saying they have 1).

Yep , the other sides open.

Me too in my younger years. Had a NS400R and lusted after VFRs and NSR250s, although i'd be super happy if I still had the NS , worth a few bob these days.

Old pic of the NS400R ( post a decent drop and slide with some home brewed bodgery on the fairings. )

I had this too, it was an absolute nightmare. I'm now with Datatool and it's been flawless.

Went out for a quick ride today since the weather was pretty mild. Fitted some bar end mirrors last week only to realise when I was out that the aren't quite positioned correctly. Seems sitting on the bike it the garage isn't quiet the same as out riding.

Either way was nice to get out again

Compulsory driveway pic when I returned, I know bar ends aren't always to everyone's taste but I always struggle only seeing shoulders in the standard ones

I've always preferred bar end mirrors on my naked bikes, were easier to see more without having to move arms/elbows out the way

Sooooo... I fixed my Radiator Fan!!!

After it decided to pour coolant all over the MOT testers station it turned out the Fan Motor was seized causing the bike to over heat.

I eventually found 5 minutes to play with it and managed to free it up... left the bike to get to temp but still nothing. I was starting to get a sinking feeling i'd need to get it into a garage to be sorted.

Then yesterday something hit me... I'm an electrical engineer by trade... why don't i check out the wiring diagram for the bike??? Good job i did too!!

Turns out there are 4 10 Amp fuses in the fuse box for the CBR, 1 of which is for the FAN MOTOR

Sure enough i pull it out and lo and behold... its blown. Because its a 23 year old bike... there are no Spares in the box  I had to borrow one from the main/passing light.

Run the bike to temp aaaand... Fan kicks in :D:D:D:D

Now i just need to order some mini 10 Amp blade fuses to replace the missing ones.

I feel a lot more comfortable/confident riding it back up to Norfolk in the Summer knowing its not going to overheat.

When the motor tried to turn and it met resistance, it then tried to draw more current to force it to turn. In this case it drew so much current it blew the 10 Amp fuse.
