Billion 7800N -early thoughts

I have BT infinity and HH3 and it would drop the connection at times, never happened with BT Anytime (or whatever it was called)

Just wonder would the 7800N stop this from happening.
I'm getting these speeds BTW

How is everybody finding the 7800N now? I like it, but it can't hold a 6dB margin on my line.

TBH that's not where it shines. I now have 10's of days uptime - The DG834GT and VG2700 would not last a day.

Do you need a 6db margin given the BRAS profiles which have a very wide spread?

I don't think your experience on uptime is that common. I have a DG834 and it just sits in a corner minding it's own business. It acts as a modem for a 3700 (with Gargoyle) - again I really wouldn't expect downtime from a router.

Billion's usp imho is it's ability to handle poor lines - not sure i'd recommend it for anything else.

Well here's what I wrote in June 2011:

"an outstanding router for a long/difficult line"

The Billion also is future proof!?, has good wireless and gigabit

Anyone know how to get DHCP reservation working on this router? On previous routers I have reserved certain addresses (via DHCP) just so devices get certain addresses and port forwarding is easy to setup. Also the devices stay on a DHCP setting so it is easy if they take them and connect them to other networks as most use DHCP. If I had static settings on my device I would have to change that when using other networks.

There is a Fixed host setting on the 7800n, but I have no idea what it is used for.

Not sure if your after this link

Rp2000, yes fixed host is what you want. I use it on mine. Static DHCP is what I'd call it

Hi,

I tried this. Apart from the fact that the Billion forces you to assign IPs outside of the DHCP scope, it works just like on other routers I have configured.

However, my devices fail to pick up IP addresses via DHCP. iPad and Macbook Pro (tried via wire and wifi). Is the host name relevant at all? I just use it as a "friendly" name to tell me devices apart, rather than an actual device hostname.

I managed to DHCP an address once. But, it gave my Macbook a normal DHCP address, even though I had declared its MAC address so should have got a "fixed host" one.

Going to try everything again today. I think the router had 1.06e firmware on it when I first tried. I then loaded 1.06g (beta Uk firmware from their forums). I will now try the 1.06f that is the latest "normal" one available on their site.

As yet I have not plugged it into my ADSL line (shouldn't make a difference) as I want to configure it to be the same as my Netgear DG834GT, and then just swap the devices over, for minimal hassle.
