Black Desert Online

Ah, damn that pet might be out of reach then. The page does say something about being able to 'check in up to two times a day during weekends, as long as it does not exceed the total number of available days' but i cant fully understand what that means. I believe it allows you to catch up days you've missed, so if you didnt log in on Tuesday, you could get that 1 day back at the weekend. What i dont think it does is let you claim 2 days when you've not *missed* a day, and i suspect not having an account isnt considered a day missed. Theres 19 days left, and you want day 20. If you only have day 2 stamped by the end of Sunday, you wont be able to reach it unfortunately.
Ive been playing since mid-Feb and thats the first free pet they've given out.

fwiw, the Family Name isnt that visible, its shown above the character with their name, but when you talk in chat, most people will see the character name not the family, they only recently added the option to display family name instead, and while people are arguing in chat they're always using the character name, so i suspect few people enabled the option to show family name.

Is there one "megaserver" to this game or are we all spread over servers?

Do current subs get a referral or anything for new players joining?
Do we have a ocuk guild? I'm tempted to pick this up.

ok just started the game and man it looks nice, however i have a problem where the game is too large for the screen resulting on not being able to see all my power bars etc in the top left and at the bottom right there appears to be a row o ficons below the coupons icon which is hidden out of view.

any ideas on how to fix this???

If there is interest I can create a guild. The game is quite daunting when you first start. My advice is read guides. Don't accept or buy anything character bound until you know what class you want to main.

Any questions I'm sure Paul and I can help as I've been playing on and off since release.

There is 1 server for EU and 1 for NA but there are channels within each server you join. New players should be in the Olvia server if you want the 100% xp + 100% combat xp bonus. Means if you wanted to level to 50 you can do it in about 5/6 hours depending on class.

A few things I would do personally. Also note there is a free trial if you don't want to spend anything.

1) I'd buy the expensive pack while on offer, the value packs, mount and the pet are well worth it.
2) Find a class you like and give them a go but don't buy anything character bound until you're sure.
3) Follow the black spirit quests, these are your main quests and you will receive extra bag slots, weapons etc... on some of them. Please note after the training session you don't get XP on missions you complete, XP is solely on killing monsters.
4) If you want to rush to 50/56 follow a guide or get someone off here babysit you through it with one of their mains. Probably wouldn't rush your first character, enjoy the world.
5) If you think it's a game you want to sink time and a bit of money into. Buy pets (account wide) weight limit increase, bag space (both character bound) these are the most important thing.
6) Follow build/skill/armour/weapon guides for your class. Others have done all the hard work for you.
7) Press esc, attendance reward and you will receive these daily and twice on Saturday and Sunday.
8) Read up on the game, there is a lot going on and a lot you won't understand as it doesn't really tell you.

There is lots more so just ask, I can create a guild which means you can ask questions easier in game, just remember levelling up is all about grind at higher levels, I mean serious grind and one of the better ways to make money is grind. Although worker empires, fishing, processing etc... can also net you good money and are good to do on the side while doing other stuff like watching tv etc...

Also some classes are much harder to play and less useful. Good starter classes I would say are: Witch/Wizard, Amazing at PvE, huge damage, aoe and just nuke everything, probably the most popular class and the visuals are great.

Beserker. Probably the easiest class, good PvE, Amazing 1v1, grabs, lots of grabs and tanks damage, slow with no real escape. Good starter class.

Dark Knight, Great PvE, Great Group fighting, Good 1v1, probably one of the most rounded classes IMO and lots of fun to play. Currently what I'm maining and will get to level 56 along with Beserker.

There are referral codes, they basically extend the regular 7-day free trial by an additional 7 days, giving 2wks access. The referrer gets a 500 loyalty points if its used (lets you buy some store items) and 1000 more pts if they buy the game (and an additional reward that varies per referral). Its not a huge deal, but you only get 100pts/day and it all adds up.
Dave covered the rest.

edit - im pretty sure that referrals wouldnt work with anyone buying on steam. Anyone re-buying on steam has to create a new account, even if you already have one. So to trial the game you'd have to buy it direct from the BDO site, or give up that account when buying from Steam, so not really compatible with the referral system, sadly.

A few things I would do personally.

On #1, at the moment the BDO website is selling discounted account upgrades (€16 & €24) to the 2nd & 3rd tier packages. Im not certain if steam users can use this, but i dont see why they couldnt. You had to create a BDO account for steam anyway, log in with it and see. https://www.blackdesertonline.com/shop/GamePass.html
To break down their valuable contents.
Pets are €9-11.
30 day Value Packs are €15 each (2 in the 3rd tier package).
Inventory slots are €8 for 8 or €14.50 for 16.
Character slots are €6 each (2 in the 3rd tier package).

So just those items alone are a decent saving. Its also the first time ive seen them offer an upgrade, i sent a ticket after buying the basic package asking if i could upgrade, and they said there wasnt such a path, it was only offered when it was back in Beta phase, and im likely going to upgrade to the 3rd tier now.

There are some things you can buy with in-game currency, however its extremely hard. You're dependant upon someone buying those items from the store, and selling them on the auction house/marketplace and frankly the $$/silver ratio is terrible (€34 outfit = 21m silver, which really isnt much) and tons of people also want them. That said, i have managed to pick up 2 outfits for my 2 main characters and a 30 day value pack. Pets are sold there too, havent won one, its essentially a raffle with everyone else attempting to buy it, if 100ppl attempt during the 'bidding' phase, 1 person will randomly be picked, and it'll feel worse than 100-1 odds.
Theres also a few things you can buy from the store using the loyalty pts mentioned above (100pts each day logged in), ie +1 inventry slot = 10 days worth. Weight, Inventory slots, 1-day value packs, character slots. Treat them as 'something for nothing'.

Fixed it. Amd radeon settings had defaulted overscan to default settings

Wow that all seems confusing. lol

Is this a game for casual players. Im not looking for another EVE (I did play it for 7 years from launch). I dont have that sort of game time any more.

All depends on your goal. If you want to compete in PvP then nothing about it is casual, its a grind fest.

If you just want to potter about, level up at your own pace and do other things like fishing, trading, horse breeding etc... then it can be casual.

Its not on EVE levels of complexity from what i understand of it :D
Its certainly accessible for casual players, but theres also a lot of information out there which can make it quite overwhelming, but at the same time its not really going to stop you doing whatever you like.

I think a lot of it is fully understanding different aspects of the game, for example energy is an important resource. Early on you'll waste it on fairly trivial things (like bartering on trade item prices to gain 30% more on a pathetic amount) because you know no better, and as you learn more about the different uses for it, you quickly realise whether or not its worth using it, and to save it up to do something in particular, like chopping trees or butchering animal, each task will drain 1 energy. So when you want to make money making meals, you might want to avoid doing a silly side quest asking you to gather something from plants, meaning less energy for butchering.

You could definitely go in and just play and enjoy it, and likewise you could do what i did which was spend almost as much time trying to fully understand every aspect and overload myself with information, plenty which was useful, but also a lot which will add to my confusion.

Give the free 7-day trial a go, just remember if you wanted to buy it on Steam (same price direct, but no steam key) you'll need a NEW & unused account, so you'd want to create a throw-away account if need be. You'll be in the same server, theres no real difference, but for whatever reason existing player cant re-purchase it and carry on with their original account on it.

Whats your overall thoughts on this game Dave in comparison to other MMOs in the last 5 years?

I know you've typically got your finger on the pulse with these ones

My thoughts differ from I love this game to I utterly hate it.

Visually its very nice and there is no instanced areas. The pop up is annoying but you eventually get past it.
The combat and combo system is fun, fluid and looks great, makes the grind a little easier.
Now the grind, depending on your aim, if you want to have the best gear and be a god in PvP then the grind is insane, tedious and takes a long time, late game will evolve around spending hours killing the same mobs. Gear wins in PvP.
Now the crafting system is equally a nightmare where it costs millions to raise your gear and can see it downgrade if it fails, jewellery can just destroy... Doesn't sound much but some of the prices are huge.
If you want to take your time, do a bit of everything, follow the missions and soak up the world then I think the game would be more enjoyable.

Being as there is a free trial I would say give it a go, its worth a try. Then if you like it buy a pack while on sale.

Ideally you need pets, weight increase, bag space increase and these are paid items.

The model actually sounds scary close to an old MMO I spent thousands upon thousands of hours playing called Silkroad...

Which is dangerous :p I may have to steer clear.
Ive heard people saying they'd played Silkroad and BDO was the first MMO they'd found that had similar aspects to it. Never heard of it personally as ive never really cared for MMOs, so cant really comment, but thats the one ive seen regularly mentioned quite fondly.
Definitely heard people talking about having spent thousands in BDO too :D I can kinda understand how it happens, and if i had the funds i'd definitely see myself spending small amounts here & there and it all adding up.

Dont have the steam version, but ive seen it mentioned on Reddit a few days ago. I think the post was a few minutes old with no replies, as i was curious about the issue because i kinda suspect the achievements are the reason why they wont let existing players buy it on Steam and carry on with that account (cos of retroactive achievements).

Still enjoying this, managed to get my Ranger, Witch, Dark Knight, Valkyrie, Striker and Sorceress all to 56 and through Awakening.

Have to say the Valkyrie is by far the easiest class to level and grind tougher mobs out of them all.
