Black Mesa Source

I'd also like to know how much they changed as to me it felt like a whole new game! I just finished it, and aside from a couple of rage moments due to jumping, I'd say it was completely fantastic.

Just finished on normal setting, Those Guys did a fantastic job !
Shows sadly PC gaming has not really moved on except for the Graphics.

For my taste the jumping needs tweaking, had to use 2 hands on the teleporter, that's just to hard for enjoyment. Crouch jumping is ok for most other times and I don't remember the original being like it

I finished recently to, really is a superb mod. I was a bit disappointed at 'on a rail' after the shinyness of the beginning but then I realised there is only so interesting a concrete tunnel can be :p. Overall I can see myself replaying this in the future while I really have no reason to revisit the original now.

I can understand why they had crouch jumping in the original, it makes more sense from a realism PoV. If you were to jump over some railings in real life without swinging your legs over you would end up flat on your face, I see pressing crouch as swinging legs over in this instance.

Found a little bit of Xen along the way:

Realism in a game consisting of zombies, aliens? Does not compute and with that, that's one odd way of looking at why it was implemented.

It was more than likely implemented to keep the old school feel of crouch and jump, not realism as it has no place in Half-Life considering what Half-Life is about.

I played a lot of this over the past few days & got to Residue Processing, I think they have done a fantastic job on this mod really brought back old memories & I've even been getting stuck in the same places I did on my first play through all those years ago.

I hope the team use all the assets to remake Blue shift & opposing forces as well.

Nothing wrong with adding realistic features to improve immersion in scifi/fantasy games.

Perhaps Gordon should have regenerating health and limited flying abilities, its ok, hl has zombies and aliens /sarcasm

I would be genuinely annoyed if they took out crouch jumping.

HL really is the FPS game series that should be the benchmark for how a character should be controlled fluidly and with precision. Everything is just right from the camera to the way the screen bobs to the mouse look momentum to the pacing of running and walking speed all the way to the way the weapons handle, both projectile and melee..

With no other FPS game have I had no complaints about some aspect of the control mechanics at all. HL just works and Black Mesa gives us what works in prettier clothing and that's awesome.

Can only imagine what HL3 will be like.

As for crouch jumping, it's genius, if you can't crouch jump then you suck at FPS, simples. Super Mario jumps higher after crouching, nothing new. That's how it should be anyway.

As i get further and further into this (just reached "Power Up") i keep thinking "this place is HUGE", i never noticed it when i played HL the first few times, but now i'm seeing a real impression of scale.

Very few bugs for a freebie too.

Only dislike is the ladders, i know the "use" key will disconnect you but i died so often in the blast pit :(

Yeah, the only bug I had was when I started a new section and on screen there still was the four thick red lines, which refer to damage taken, I think. A simple reload of the last save worked.

Quite a failed bit of sarcasm when you passively quote part of my post with the zombies and aliens bit, makes it like a sly dig but trying to disguise it as a bit of sarcasm.

I never said they shouldn't take crouch jumping out of the game, i said it was more than likely implemented to keep an old school feel over realism, otherwise they would have probably tried to do a Battlefield: 3 animation of jumping over objects if that was the case and myself saying realism had no place in Half-Life was more than likely a drastic accusation, but small amounts is okay but too much can ruin a game as it is a game afterall, some bits need to feel unrealistic, i don't want my games to be too realistic but i get some people do.

Have you never played a computer game before? :p

It's not like it's unique to Half Life, pretty much all FPS games have it and it is generally bound to the shift key by default.

I always press shift and expect my avatar in a new game world to go faster. I become sad when it doesn't work.

Have you only played computer games since COD4? The original HL didn't have sprint. It wasn't unique to the original Half Life either, pretty much all games were like this and generally bound walk to the shift key by default.

I always press shift and expect my avatar in a new game world to walk. I become sad when it doesn't work and he sprints off like a spastic.

If you were wondering you can press alt to walk.

Love the people justifying crouch jumping by 'realism'

Shall we add two buttons for run as well? One for right leg and one for left leg :p
Jump over small obstacles with regular jump, higher obstacles with crouch jump.

It's more like there being 'w' to run and 'shift and w' to sprint.
