Black Mesa Source

Can't believe people are complaining about something as basic as crouch-jumping, I bet heads would explode if some people in here tried to understand bunny hopping in HL1 :D

Problem is, its old skool and not many remember it, or not even used crouch jumping before.

We've been diluted with a mix of "press X now" or one button does it all for you, or on screen hints and old skool gamers have generally forgot about it and newer gamers didn't even know about it..

I was a bit, erm, why can't I jump up onto a crate at one time in the game, but it soon came back to me, I did find a link to a 360 pad config that combined crouch and jump into one button, but actually I never used it, just got used to playing the game as it was intended to be played.

I think this is an excellent mod, I was playing this only last night, missus nephew who is a fab COD 4 player didn't get this game at all... His comments were "why does it look so old, whats with the big screens (Old CRT screens on the desks lol) why do I have to press jump and duck (crouch) why do I walk then have to press something to run" he simply didn't get it at all, and when I said this is how I used to play fps games back in 1998 he just looked gone out..

Safe to say, he'll not be playing black mesa in favour of COD lol He's only 12. Bless him. Although he shouldn't be playing COD either at that age, well thats another debate..

It's weird that the main criticism's that people have for this mod are things that were present in the original game.

In the original HL you had

Crouch jumping x infinity
Dodgy ladders
Sprint jumping - i'm not 100% on this but I'm pretty sure it was there.

Black Mesa is amazing. Hope these guys get jobs with Valve and work on HL3

The ladders aren't TOO bad, it's a shame they aren't like powerful magnets which attach your suit to them like in HL1 but they aren't as bad as people are making out. Still managed to fall down an elevator shaft earlier and latch on at the bottom to save my life :p

I don't understand it though because this is a PC gaming forum, pretty much any Valve developed FPS has crouch jumping in it, even Team Fortress and CS, thought it'd be second nature to everybody here :/

I think it's all coming back to me! There was no sprinting at all in Half Life - that's a Half Life 2 thing. In HL you got a jump module thingy before Xen - sort of like a suit upgrade - allowing you to long jump. But I'm sure you did long jumps in the Hazard course?? Maybe that was with the module too...

Silly question but why can't I see my gun?

There is no gun. <--- Morpheus

I keep thinking Shotgun is assigned to slot 4. Its getting really annoying when I'm wielding my Magnum, press 4 to switch to shotgun and fire to change weapon and wind up wasting magnum ammo on a wall ><

For some reason playing this game is making me want to play RAGE. I keep thinking of how amazing the gun sounds are whenever I fire the SMG.

If you were wondering you can press alt to walk.

Thank god you're here! Honestly, when I get the urge to play this I just jump right in as I'm in too much of a hurry and never look at the controls :p :D

Not quite the same though is it? First of all crouch jumping is completely different. Gordon's jumps are considerably smaller in Black Mesa than they are in HL1, just go back and play it to see the massive difference. Secondly the ladders are completely different. They're rigid/easier in a way that they totally weren't in HL1 yet are dodgy in a completely different way. Lastly there was no sprint function whatsoever.

I see what you mean, that they were all "quirks" in the original but they are now quirky in an entirely different fashion - definitely not a case of "Oh it's like that because we wanted to make it like the original!", and more that it's just not quite right.

All correct.

Back to the ladders, very much like Quake 3 games for me ;)
Run to the ladder the wrong way and as your falling quickly rotate 180 deg to grip the rungs.....easy (that's why the ladders have the safety cage at the top )

Just thought Crouch jumping problem may be because this mod introduced "Sprint" and you needed Fwd+Sprint then duck+ Jump, in the (wired warehouse) and Teleporter...well I did anyway !

I did have some stuttering in some earlier levels and chronic stuttering right at the very end..anyone else ?

As suggested, I hope Valve pays these Guys to do a Blue shift etc..with their maps. Some of those later Maps/textures were better than anything Valve release in the whole HL series.

I get stutter and generally poor (high 20s low 30s) fps in some stages like with smoke/fog effects. Not sure why as my machine runs all other source games pretty well maxed out. :(

Well yeah ok he doesn't jump as high but crouch jumping is crouch jumping. It's the same principle and it certainly doesn't warrant the massive amount of pi55ing and moaning. Literally half this thread is people moaning about it!

I have literally no idea what "They're rigid/easier in a way that they totally weren't in HL1 yet are dodgy in a completely different way" means in relation to the ladders. They seem exactly the same to me. They were pretty rubbish in the original game.

I do kinda remember the suit jumping add in in the original HL so I am probably wrong about that.

My only real serious gripe is that the game seems to stutter frequently. I suspect that this is down to some of the in game effects but my rig is more than capable of running something that looks like this. I don't think it is optimised properly. Still it does seem to be better the further into it I get so i'm not too worried. I could turn the graphics down to fix it i'm sure.

All in all a great re-make of a great game. :)
