Blackberry 9900/9930

Little Off Topic but this seems to be the most active Blackberry thread here, does anyone own a Playbook?

Yep i do and still absolutely loving mine altho it still needs a bit more polish...just waiting for the Tablet OS 2 which will bring it up to date...droolworthy update hopefully by end of this mth or early Nov.

Use mine for web browsing when im downstairs watching tv and even in my bed. I also use it at work where i have it either bridged or tethered to my 9900...in bridged mode i get all my emails and bbms on my playbook and can access files on my BB.

Couldnt think of using any other tablet tbqh.

just spoke to Orange.

been offered 9900 FOC, with 600 mins, unlimited texts, 1gb internet, bb service and orange care @£37 x 24 months.

Been with them 12+ years, really thought I would get it lower than that. So sat on fence at moment.

Orange care is £6, so thats the same deal I've got, £31pm, i've been with Orange for a long time too but am I low user. Its better than new orange customer deals and about the same as O2 or voda are offering, and they dont seem to be bothered if I wanted to leave or not.

Hmmm... that would actually suit me more than the deal I agreed with them, I won't even use 600mins but the 1GB data sounds good, might give them a ring and see if they'll change it for me.

Which they won't!

I get my phone today, should I give it a 12hr charge before I use it or do you not need to do this anymore?

I've always charged new phones for 12hrs and run the battery til flat the first time around, it was recommended on a phone I had years ago so have always stuck to this approach.

The battery probably arrived part charged anyway and while I'd recommend charging to full the first time don't worry about dis-charging it - the circuit doesn't work in the same way as the old times when it judged remaining battery power.

The 37/m deal looks like panther (35?)+ orange cover minus some loyalty as panther has the larger allowance. It's possible you may get a better price by getting phone insurance through your bank/home insurance for others considering it. A lot of contents insurance does phone cover for under £15 a year as long as you register the handset, it's worth checking out at the least :)

Handsets are often not branded in the first batch (SGS, some SGS2, BBs) mostly because we couldn't brand it in time because there was some problem at launch ;)

Indeed, Lithium Ion batteries are just a "charge whenever" setup. The only thing they don't do is trickle charge at 100%, they just turn off the charge circuit until about 92% then turn it back on again. This is why you see a lot of people who go "I turned off the charger and it's instantly down to 96% and I am outraged. WTF <brand of phone> IT'S BROKE" etc... but teaching consumers the innerworkings of charge circuits isn't high on the agenda for phone makers as you'd imagine.

Sweet, I'll get one of those charging stands then and leave it in that during the day if it's not gonna kill the battery.

Want to get home now so I can play with the damn thing, been waiting long enough!

Bebuzz for changing the colours of your LED...you can get some real funky colours...berryweather for weather...poynt and flixster are another 2 and wikitude which uses the inbuilt accelerometer to show you whats around your local area.

What sort of battery life have you guys been getting? I left mine on charge for 24hrs when I first got it, I started playing with it yesterday around 6pm and of course I've been paying it a lot of attention setting stuff up. It was off overnight and I've not really used it much today, only made 1 10min phonecall since I've had it and it's already down to about 1/4 battery.

Usually i get a good days use out of the 9900, although today im suffering from real bad battery life but i think its due to the data outage at the moment as the phone is still connecting to the BIS but not getting anything back. So ive turned my data connection off as before at idle i was hitting 10% discharge without even touching the phone. Now its settled back down to 1-2% discharge which is what i was getting before the data outage.

Just dont expect miracles from the battery, ive been telling people this over and over that because of the updated specs and the shoddy battery RIM bundled in...your not going to get amazing battery life sadly. But youc an update to the latest OS 353 which improves battery life or the newest update 430 but its early days for 430 so im giving it a few days to see what people say about it. At the moment im running the 440 OS leak and my battery has been pretty decent besides the data outage.

Head over to crackberry.com as theres a big thread with various tips on how to get the best battery life out of your 9900.

For me as long as i get a full days use out of mine, im happy and i use my BB pretty hard ie lots of emails, texts, bbms and a few hrs on the phone.

Good stuff, cheers Spawn. Will have a look at crackberry, still finding my way around the new OS though so won't be updating anything for a little bit I don't think.

Well tbh if you havent set up your phone ie apps and stuff like that then id definitely look at updating to 353 or 440, people will say the 440 is better but u lose the cool fade out light on the trackpad so if thats a deal breaker stick with 353.

But best to do it when the device is fresh that way you dont have to faff around with re-loading your apps etc etc.
