Blackberry 9900/9930

I just don't understand why you can get the phone for free for £31pm from CarphoneWarehouse yet if you get it from Vodafone directly you have to cough up £41pm to get a free phone. For pretty much the same plan

This one has an easy answer. Networks pay cpw a large amount of cash for each customer known as a SAC in the industry (Subscriber Acquisition Cost). CPW give some of this back to the customer in the form of money negotiated off etc etc...

Edit: Technically the SAC is an average for all customers including all channels + marketing etc etc.. but you get the point. I guess it would be a SAC 3rd party payment to give it a full name.

Honestly think the Voda 12 month tarrifs are damn good. Best deal is oddly direct from them on the £46 a month tarrif.

I guess this will make it harder for me to use the CPW £31pm + free phone contract as leverage when I speak directly to Orange about a similar deal then :(.

Looks like quite a few fellow Canadians of mine are getting their hands on the 9900...it wasnt supposed to be officially released till tommorrow so looks like this time round the Canadians got the 9900 first rather than us Europeans and Americans getting it...the Torch 9810 is being released on fri by the Canadian network Rogers.

Spoke to my bro in Canada and hes getting one today i think...lucky barsteward whereas ive got to wait a week or so, maybe even more before i get hold of one:(...if he was coming over here in the next few days i would have asked him to pick me up one off line.

Why is everyone more excited for the Bold than the Torch 2? I mean IMO the Torch 2 is just a bold with a bigger screen... Coming from an iPhone user so this isn't a troll, genuine question

Yes and no. If I were you I'd phone up as soon as possible to discuss your next contract and say "match <cpw deal> or I'm off". They will put you through to retentions, say the same thing and ask for them to match. Ask if this is their best offer - if they say yes you can ask them to lock in the deal for 24hrs while you think about it.

Bolds are business devices and the more classical blackberry formfactor.

Personally I never liked the Torch, it looks too big and clumsy and feels the same in your hand.

I like the combination of the shape/size of the Bold with the added bonus of a touch-screen.

No it isnt...not in a million yrs the Torch is a different kettle of fish altogether...i had one and i couldnt stand using the onscreen keyboard but even moreso i couldnt get used to the hardware keyboard as you had to keep flipping the phone open to use it...at least with the 9900 the keyboard is there underneath the screen so none of this sliding the phone up and down etc malarkey.

I had my torch for about 6mths before i got fed up of it and sold it for the 9780 which i enjoy using but compared to my old 9000 Bold...nothing and i mean nothing beats the keyboard...regarded as the best hardware keyboard bar none on all BB devices.

So the 9900 is causing much more hype than the new torches because a lot of people cannot get on with the Torch and the keyboard.

Other than the keyboard there wont be much difference between hardware as they will both be running the same hardware altho the screen real estate on the new Torch is bigger than the 9900 but for me i can easily overlook that as i have an iphone4 myself and if i need screen real estate then ill use the iphone4 instead.

Oh and ill just add this...size and bulkiness...the 9900 wins hands down, the torches are bulky thick devices and im not a fan of bulky devices myself...such a sexy damn device with the iphone-esque steel band around it...but unlike apple the 9900 wont suffer from signal loss like the iphone4 did:p:D...well hopefully:D

The only thing working against me is that my contract doesn't expire until Nov, I'm just allowed to upgrade 3 months early, so I might have to leave the blagging until later in the year, by which time they might be more flexible on prices anyway.

Topcashback offering £130 cashback on vodafone pre order direct... querying to see whether there is any stipulation of a 18 or 24 month contract. Would be nice to knocn an extra £80 off my 12 month overall cost!

on the Orange page about the Blackberry 9900, the bit about 'whats in the box' doesn't say anything about a holster. Is it not coming with one, also any idea if it will come with a Memory card?

It doesn't say anything about a holster or memory card on the 9780 spec page either and that definitely comes with both so I wouldn't worry.

Been waiting ages for this and just read that there's no autofocus on it. :(

Has anyone got a link to any photo comparisons?

Should have it instock or at least a demo in the next few days (Sunday or Monday). I'll have a play with it and share my feedback :)

I so want one but I'm also waiting to see what the next iPhone will be like before I decide.
