Blueyonder/Telewest speed upgrades

Games would see no effect if the upload was changed anyway.

how is that? 384k/s upload actualy turn out to 45MAX speed upload. Games like battlefield 2 can do with all the upload speed you can get.

I read a long while ago that the ping is based on the underlying rate at which the internet connection is based, not on the rate at which you are able to recieve/transmit data. It was based on multiplexing, the network sends a block of data (not going to use the term packet cause Im not sure its correct) and depending on the setting of your cable modem you are allowed to consume a limited amount of this data. The larger your cable modem cap the larger fraction of this unit you are able to consume.

This ties in with the idea of being able to "uncap" your cable modem. The ping is related to the rate at which these blocks are sent around and arrive to u. It is the ISPs infrastructure's speed which ultimately determines your ping.

However the place I believe I read this information, I cant find that section and does go on to describe how changing upload speeds can effect your connection to a gaming server:

Sweet ! Blueyonder just upgraded my area now, sitting at 1150 - 1200kb/sec in news groups with ease :D
Just downloaded around 3Gb in near 45 mins :D

And if they never use all of that, it makes not an ounce of odds...

Evidently not, since they work fine on lower speed connections.

You could uncap your modem to 10Mbps up, and it wouldn't make an ounce of odds. It's also illegal.

Ahh, what a nice explanation - if only it was anywhere near the truth :)

'Ping' is simply a program which sends out a certain kind of ICMP packet asking the remote host to send a reply packet, and then calculates and displays the time difference. That time is the 'ping' between the two hosts.

I found this to explain the technicalities better than I can.

The larger your cable modem cap the larger fraction of this unit you are able to consume.
Load of rubbish I'm afraid. Modem speed has little effect, unelss you're on a very, very, very slow connection in which sending a packet would be a significant part of the operation. On today's connections you'll handle thousands of packets per second so the time to send the packet is negligible.

Im not trying to justify how having a large bandwidth (i.e. 10Mb) will help u in online games, its irrelevant. As I tried to say what ever broadband service u have pings will be the same assuming the same network is used. Not claiming to be a mastermind on the subject just relaying what I read a long while ago and not being able to link directly to it.

In the link I did provide it was suggested that cable modems are deliberately capped server side to even out the playing field between low ping *edit*s and high ping *edit*s.

I've got my 10mb now, had it for a few days. Feels a bit pointless tbh.. 99% of the time I'm hitting around 550kbs because servers are capping out. Isn't too bad on torrents I guess, hitting cap with several on the go. I'm so No swearing at these crappy UK upload speeds, grrr.

You won't notice any difference between 1mb and 10mb in gaming tbh - yet.

I totally agree. I'm so ****** with these crappy free upgrades from BY *sigh*.

In games like CS you won't notice the difference between 512 and 10mb yet.

I never commented on the first bit. I just explained what ping was :)

Anybody know how long until the Doncaster area is done?

Not sure off the top of my Head, but you can check this site out, and they have them all covered.

It also tells you which UBR you are on, so you can check on the Blueyonder Status page when this will be upgraded for your area.

;)

Does anyone know when the portsmouth area will be upgraded to 10mb, its run under NTL though so that page saying when it will be done doesnt help cause it only shows blueyonder upgrades :(
