BMW and M Power Owners

It's only a waste of money until you need to claim, just like regular insurance on anything else.

On the warranty debate... not a Z4, but I've had my car (e92 330d) around 6.5 years now and so have paid approx £3-3.5k out on warranty subs in that time (first year free as AUC). I estimate the car has had round £20k+ worth of warranty repairs during that period, which is almost what I paid for the car in the first place.

As a value proposition, I'd say it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. Sure, if I had taken the car to an independent then some of the bigger jobs might've been a bit cheaper, but also some of the smaller jobs might've never got done and I dare say that it would've still cost me more than that £3-3.5k for all the work that has been done.

Honestly now, is this reasonable for the car to consume this much oil?

My daily commute Mon-Fri in total is 200miles and then any other miles I do over the weekend, around every 2-3weeks I top up with 2L of 0W-30 Castrol edge, Is that fine and something I should stop worrying about and just put up with?

Cheer

I'd say check the z4 forums. My coupe doesn't use much if any tbh, sensor has not droped by a single bar yet. Different engine though so not comparable.

2litres every 1000miles ?

My M5 gets through about that. Lots of BMW engines of around that period seem to like a bit of oil with their petrol.

What's strange is how variable it is between engines. Some use almost no oil and others drink it, despite being made only days apart and being serviced the same.

Chap on the Z4 Forum says similar with how variable it is between engines

ive had approx 30 m54 engined cars now and they are hit & miss. Some use 1l per 1000 miles some dont use any! anything less than 1000mi per litre is silly though.

Mine's been doing it since I've owned it and hasn't got worse since, I'll just have to keep an eye on it for now and worry about getting other things sorted, Summer is coming up soon and pushing that roof down manually is HORRIBLE!

Very hit & miss with M54 oil consumption, my old 530i barely used any in the time I owned it yet a work mate has to top his 330i up weekly, I don't think it's anything to worry about, my 530 used no oil yet still died of a failed head gasket, my mates 330 is on 290k now and going just fine.

That's because the first 100-300 miles of a cars life will go a long way to determining it's level of oil consumption. With cars like M5s, M3s, etc, I would guestimate that very few new honours wait the required break in period before giving it some beans

Conversely it was my understanding that cars which were mollycoddled in their early lives were the engines that suffered the most in terms of increased oil consumption.

There is a blue 330D that is from somewhere near where I live, maybe Hixon area, who drives like the internet image of a BMW driver. I believe in his mind he is Senna, he may actually call himself Fred Senna or something similar.

Just saying

I ran both my M3's in by the book as I do with all my new cars, Polo GTI excepted. The E46 had a specific running in program and oil change service around 1200 miles, both of which were serviced the same. My first one never used a drop, my second one used around a litre every 10K miles. Many years ago my dad had 2 x Carlton GSi 24V's as company cars. His was run in by the book, his partners was smashed from day one. His never used a drop, the other drank the stuff. Engines can all use oil differently and in my experience running them in does not create a car that uses oil, perhaps the reverse.
