BMW and M Power Owners

They came back! I don't get it.

It was working on the first half of a journey. At some point - including one full switch off and restart lasting about 1min - they stopped.

I then got home, car wasn't used for about 4 hours but they were working when I got back in.

The window was working (dropped when I opened the door), the mirror auto-dimming was working, the door lights were working. However none of the controls worked and there was no lights on the controls themselves.
Probably a loose or maybe corroded connector. If it's intermittent like that it's almost certainly something fairly simple and mechanical to blame.

sounds like you're having a lot of trouble with that car.. I'd be fed up by now.

Yeah and no.

  • HUD emitting high frequency noise - fixed after 3 visits to the dealer by full HUD replacement which took roughly 1 month. Didn't have the car for about 2 weeks of that.
  • Whining noise coming from driver front wheels - after 4 visits dealer could hear it but couldn't work out what it was. Fixed by replacing front discs and pads. Didn't have the car for about 2 weeks.
  • Christmas tree dashboard - fixed after 1 visit. Didn't have the car for 2 days. Duff EGR valve.
  • Paint crazing on mirror - dealer didn't care. £60 to respray and problem is solved.

  • iffy drivers door controls...tbc.

is it 640i that you got? how long have you had it/what mileage have you done on it? I've love a 640i as a daily driver.. and now that they're getting below 20k...

640d wish I'd gotten a 40i or 50i tbh as I was meant to be doing more miles. I've had it a year and a half and only done about 14k. Has 48k on it now.
Funnily enough was looking at z4s last night :p

hmm seems like a car I'd only run with warranty on it :D 14k miles and all the above.

Z4's are great ;) DO IT!

Yup. Warranty was invaluable. The HUD unit alone was 2k with something like another 1k of costs.

Very tempted by a 35is.

It's going to feel like a major step down, it's a great car but it's E90 based which will feel incredibly old fashioned after an F12.

It's the interior that holds me back. I went for the 640 largely because of the combination of a fantastic engine, great looks and the fact that it's an awesome place to be. It is literally a barge though. The 35is has the engine but you're right, it drops everything else for the better handling and fun factor. I'll probably end up sticking with the 640 for another year or so and then see what the new z4 offers or more probably a Cayman. I do seem to have had my fair share of issues with my BMW's though. But then again...could have had those problems in any car. Who's to know?

e89's are supposed to be more of a GT car but I can't compare it to e86. Especially with my electric steering that kills kittens any time it gets driven.

35is sound good, perform like crazy and can be mapped to lolBHP.

It's also relatively un-useful compared to the Audi one because the dials are always there (can't put the map there like Audi, for example) and they have implanted two massive great plastic rings inside the display to mark out where the dials are

It's been available on the 3 and 4 series since last year. It's similar to the multifunction display on the F10 and is now referred to as digital cockpit.

Oh. So just the digital black panel? Well consider me educated on this disappointing feature!

Thanks. Follow up question, would there be any noticeable difference in functionality between equivalent levels of infotainment (eg Business Pro Nav) on a 2016 registered car vs 2017? Obviously the reg' plate doesn't necessarily relate to build date though so might not be a straight forw

Can you still do that? I've really struggled lately as the bmw warranty site no longer gives the vin

I can do it via Blueprint Live with a business account.

If you give me the reg I'll trust you the VIN. :)

Oh and sorry for not doing your Photoshop edit. Its a bit of a pain changing black wheels to grey, as opposed to silver to grey :p

I think the idrive version may have changed around that time, as the touchscreen idrive models came out, but I think the differences on a non-touch car are just cosmetic rather than functionally different.
