BMW and M Power Owners

Before I get the owners manual out for some night time reading my 3 series is now showing inspection overdue 05/2018 on the display. It’s not due a service until next year so what the hell is this, does it need to be done and now that it’s overdue does it affect the warranty?

Bit gutted to be honest as I’ve been keeping an eye on what the car requires to date and this just crept up on me.

How old is the car?

Done some reading and it looks like it’s the mot is due warning? Got the mot done at my local garage, seems like I should be able to simply change the date to next year.

In hindsight it was a bit of a silly question. Just trying to cover all areas :) going to look at a 630i tomorrow...

Turns out the sale fell through so I went to look at it today. Car is in really, really good nick to be honest; minimal interior wear, good tyres with tread, clean bodywork etc

However, it made a ticking/tink sound for about 5-10 sec on start up. I've googled this and opened a can of worms with comments saying it's the lifters (HVA) or some cars have had replacement cylinder heads. No idea what it is and it's put me off...

Had the 530d for almost 2 years now and its now nearly 3 years old - I don't think I've ever been this satisfied with a car. It's brilliant. It has more power than I need, more performance than I want yet provides no real penalty for having that performance available. I'd like to keep it at least another 3 years..

Thought I'd treat it to some polish and wax at the weekend and some photos in a nice location.

Unfortunately I forgot how bad I am at taking photos so after 90 minutes of driving to various sort of scenic locations and taking terrible pictures I ended up giving up and using a handily located carpark after stopping for fuel :p

What's the ownership experience been like? What do you like most and least? Many issues/faults/fixes?

I've had my 2014 335i msport manual for about a week now and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Over half term I drove from Hertfordshire to Sussex and did a few day trips in Sussex, so I am starting to get to know the car (and idrive/nav etc).

First observation - whatever the car, the likelihood is that you will spend a lot of time stuck in traffic. However - a modern entertainment system goes someway to reducing the pain, and the nav helped us avoid some jams on the a27.

Second observation - wow! when the road is clear this is a totally different experience from my old Volvo! Acceleration in any gear is impressive, and it feels very planted and controlled at speed. It is a real pleasure to drive. I have been out for a few evening drives to try out the car on an empty road. I can now safely overtake cars on single lane carriageways. This was pretty much impossible in my volvo, such that I cannot recall whether I ever successfully carried out the maneuver, although I can remember many occasions of pulling out to overtake and giving up and pulling back in! It is also now possible to safely pull away from traffic when emerging.

3rd - I will have to be careful. It feels so normal at high speed, it is easy to not realize how fast you are going. My old Volvo was noisy 60mph+ and it never felt comfortable cornering with any speed, so that obviously kept a check on how fast I would drive. My drive home from Brighton to Herts was quite a bit quicker than normal. This is not because I was driving crazy speeds, but rather that I felt more comfortable maintaining a high speed than I had in the old rattler.

There is sometimes a high pitched squeaking sound from the brakes when I start driving after using the handbrake. I had noticed this when I took it for a test drive. They replaced the front pads and said that the problem was fixed. However the issue is still present. I actually think it might be an issue with disengagement of the handbrake, as if I raise the handbrake and lower it it gets rid of it. Is this a known issue? It is used approved, am I best taking it to the closest BMW garage rather than the place I bought it (1hr away)?

If your car has the blue calipers then they are know to squeak, mine do and others people on other forums have said the same. The dealer said that’s normal for those brakes? I personally don’t think so but in the main I can’t hear the squeak when the windows are up so I just put up with it.
